I always marvel at the idea that there is a place where radio is good enough to warrant a decent antenna. Everywhere I've lived (except for one station, WTUL, in New Orleans) there is no need to worry about fidelity because the only station on the radio worth hearing is talk radio. Radio in the United States is, for the most part, a vast wasteland so empty of any redeeming qualities all licenses should be taken by force from their owners and handed over to private citizens. Unfortunately if our government took over the stations it would be nothing but hymns and preachers 24/7. The Brits may be up in arms about "non-dancing" rules for their pubs but there are large areas of this country where you can't legally POSESS alcohol, much less buy it in a bar. Sorry, getting steeled up for Shrub's "State of the Division" address. www.psychicreform.com Who let that monkey in here!?! Dada is dead. Watch your overcoat.
actually i've found many college radio stations that do kick ass. of course the distance they can trasmit is usually shameless (the shows i did at UCLA were only available via the campus cable channel #50 or some bullshit like that), but there are a few out there worth checking out. KCRW (santa monica, ca) has always treated me well. lots of in studio performances, jason bentley always spins great stuff, and the "morning becomes eclectic" show is just plain great. KUSF (san fran, ca) has it's moments more often than not as well (esp with the jungle dj's). I even listen (on the net) to some friend's shows on the Case Western (cleveland, oh) college station and damn they are good. it just takes a little poking around. But yes, if a radio station is trying to make money and get advertisters there is no way in hell they are going to go to a format where the albums hardly ever go gold. money money money. c32 -----Original Message----- From: orb-admin@mailman.xmission.com [mailto:orb-admin@mailman.xmission.com]On Behalf Of Alan Sent: Tuesday, January 28, 2003 8:58 PM To: orb@mailman.xmission.com Subject: [Orb] (no subject) I always marvel at the idea that there is a place where radio is good enough to warrant a decent antenna. well, Atlanta is blessed with 2 good college stations: WREK 91.1, Georgia Tech's station (see: http://www.wrek.org) has 2 shows that listies might like: mobius and Atmospheres (most weekdays from 10 PM until about 2 AM). they also play lots of avant-jazz and just plain wierd shit. it's all on the web: go to the site and click on "Schedule Grid". from there you can choose your show.... we also have WRAS 88.5 (Album 88), Georgia State's Station. this station plays a wider variety of stuff, but LX has done an in-studio there, and i used to hear lots of ORb and the like late (like, post 2 AM) on Friday Night/Saturday Morning. unfortunately that DJ graduated, and now they play more trance/house type stuff on Friday nights. and, silly liberal arts kids, they aren't on-line. (i know one of the PostScript DJs, and she says they haven't figured that out yet....) otherwise: commercial radio in this town blows. you want country, classic rock, or souther rock? take your pick! bah -- i listen to WREK, WRAS, and NPR. that gets me through the day.
