Hiya all. First time poster, first time Orb show goer, nicely tired from a merry car trip back from LA but I may as well say hi and report in. I got in just in time for Dntel. He played some really staticy, slow-paced, art-school type ambience. I don't wanna just dismiss Dntel, but this was boring and basically sounded like a couple granular synthesizers running at the same time for 45 minutes. Things picked up with Boom Bip. From what I'd read I was expecting some guy playing beats out of a sampler and instead a four-piece band showed up and slammed down a nice techno-rock hybrid. A guy called Bus Driver showed up for one song for some extremely fast rapping. They could occassionally get a bit whiny but overall were a lot of fun and a much needed 1 am wake-up call. Next up was John Tejada. Didn't really make too much of an impact on me, although it would have helped to be in a club rather than in Walt Disney Concert hall. He was slick, sounded like a lot of other minimal stuff, but ended up seeming simple with the Orb coming afterwards. So then the Orb... My first impression is that Thomas Fehlmann is quite a goofy guy. He was the only performer wearing a suit and he was constantly dancing and getting absolutely every sound. His DJ set had a lot more variety than what came before, maybe not Orb-style stuff but definitely quality, and I got pretty psyched up. So did Paterson apparently. He wandered out to take some pics of the crowd and then basically jumped around on the side of the stage while Fehlmann's set finished up. The Orb part itself... well obviously this wasn't the orbus terrarum tour and it wasn't mindblowing but I thought it was great for what it was. Okie Dokie basically seemed like a lazy album after the show - all the kompakt songs were stretched out and more developed and with the samples mixed in everything flowed and pulsated and felt on par with listening to ultraworld or orblivion. Much less empty, much bigger sound than anything else that night, constantly shifting, and a lot of fun to get into. I even liked Kan Kan - it needed the Paterson half that was completely missing on the album. Paterson and Fehlmann seemed to be having a lot of fun, constant dancing, hopping, and pounding it, until Paterson appeared to get pissed off in the middle of Lunik and walked off. Fehlmann went after him and eventually came back to finish off with Masterblaster. Paterson wandered back and killed off Masterblaster by playing AHEGPB and then did a completely random DJ set. The acoustics were kinda off in the Hall - bass was muddy and treble was too high - so it got to be kinda painful in multiple ways and by 6 am I was completely ready to get out of there... From what I've read on here I guess I got both the good and the bad side in one night. Still, loved it... mostly. I've got a question for anyone else who saw the show though... During Gee Strings LX would occassionally mix in some melody that I don't remember in the original but I feel like I recognized from somewhere. I was kinda soft sounding, almost like something by Aphex Twin.... anyone got a clue what I'm talking about? I need some sleep but hope everything goes well at the other shows... Peace out y'all. - Peter -- _______________________________________________ Search for businesses by name, location, or phone number. -Lycos Yellow Pages http://r.lycos.com/r/yp_emailfooter/http://yellowpages.lycos.com/default.asp...
