Ogg sounds pretty cool but it needs a bit more hardware support before I start using it to save my music. If I had big bucks I'd find the best
That seems to be the only thing really holding it back. Since it's patent free, there are no royalties to pay for implementing it in hardware. Thus, I am hoping we'll be seeing support for it in all the hardware players.
Unfortunately, rumor has it that the MP3 people are threatening companies like Apple that if they implement OGG then they lose their license agreements for the mp3 codec. *sigh*
That's exactly the sort of thing that might increase the uptake of Ogg. If manufacturers get pressure from the mpeg folks theymight be more likely to say "why are we paying them a license fee to get heavy with us?" Companies like Apple can't just drop mp3 support, but I'd expect to see some smaller OEMs start making portable ogg-players (with no mp3 support) and shipping them with a disk containing royalty-free ogg-encoder software. fingers crossed. -- Horms and I discussed this, and we came up with two categories of people.
