.... so after listening to you all talk about these prog bands I have never heard... last night I found this station.. http://livetronica.net/ It says they specialize in Radiohead, Ozric Tentacles, Hawkwind, Orb, Kraftwerk + more! Wierd selection, and I got to hear some great live Praxis with Buckethead and Bootsie and the gang. I missed Buckethead coming thru last thursday cuz I was outta town, but saw him up close a few months ago. Wierd that there would be an Orb connection, albeit small. The worm turns, the wind shifts one-eighty, and the firestorm turns back on the arsonists, who had been operating with impunity for so long that they'd forgotten the feeling of Heat. -From the book Songs of the Doomed by Hunter S. I remember I used to buy these 'underground' compilations (from Harvest mostly) and then try to find the artists that were represented there... And if you can find the American records of a Polish guy named Niemen (virtually impossible) and the Hare Krishna bunch of Sweet Smoke (Germans I guess), you'll be in for a treat...

Jason, you kinda put the cart before the horse going right for Spokes. Being their latest album, as well as Trainer their first album, they seem to be the hardest to swallow. If you are an Orb fan I friggin' gar' on' teee (as that cajun cook used to say) you'll enjoy Restproof Clockwork. My personal favorite album is "Double Figure," so favorite, that indeed I gave the vinyl version as a wedding gift this winter and almost went and bought him some "as seen on tv" gift instead so I could have it. I guess the best presents are the ones you want back. And Alan E., I know you are the token 'sevant' listee, but don't go recommending P-TV on here or I'm gonna hafta land on you feet first... you soda-pop, cracka' ass, kentucky hick. p.s. Oh, and jason.. if you can get Black Dog or Plaid's peel sessions you'll have a good idea of what they can do. The rare calypso or island song they do are ab fab. Someone should give me the ftp addy so I can upload those old Black Dog discs I shelled out for as well. Yeah, what bbroo said. I'd like to recommend two albums: Psychic TV "Towards Thee Infinite Beat." I really didn't like the remix album "Beyond Thee Infinite Beat" very much. It had no songs I liked more than the original or even close to as much as. Porcupine Tree is a "prog" band I remember liking a lot. The song "When Stars Die" is super sweet. Terminal Power Company was on the same label and had a similar modern prog feel. The band Perfume Tree had a great album out on a now defunct label called World Domination. Ozrics Tentacles? I've got a killer bootleg set by those guys from Boulder that is just amazing. I want to eat a fist full of 'shrooms and jam with those guys. Man? Or Astroman? is as prog as surf music can get. I sent an e-mail to the list about prog with a bunch of obsure-o Italian bands that a knowledgable fellow recommended, but unfortunatley it was over the damned 3KB limit so the info is lost into the cracks of the internet. Which is too bad because he said that Italian bands are considered the cream of the prog crop. Personally I can't stand the stuff, but me and my friend were listening to a CD of his called The Flow, that was pretty good, kind of heavy a little on the psyc side. He also mentioned some bands called Bump and Atomic Rooster that I had never heard of. Isn't early Hawkwind considered prog, dunno because I hate them, once had a boss who's favorite band was Hawkwind, but I don't think he really even liked them he just wanted to be able to say he had a favorite band, I mean he did own a record store and all. Some of Peter Green's from Fleetwood mac solo work is pretty trippy, I like The End of the Game, good stuff. Finally The Scorpions first album (yes the frickin' Scorpions) Lonesome Crow is definitely worth checking out, nothing like their later glam dreck, I dunno if it's prog but it's one of the most underated rock albums of all time. Wow, it takes a real music geek to discuss music you don't even like, top that!
