Re: M_Boats: L.E.D. "Retrofit"
Craig, You can get portable LED navigation lights through Cabelas. The come on a C clamp mounting bracket, use 4 AA batteries, last up to 100 hours on a set of batteries, and cost $22 each. I found them in their catalog, but I'm sure they would be on the web site, too. www.cabelas.com Larry On Sat, 26 Mar 2005 18:17:22 -0500 "Craig F. Honshell" <chonshell@ia4u.net> writes:
After reading about Bill's Ankerlight (excellent link, Bill, thanks for sharing), I started wondering:
Could the portable "dinghy nav lights", such as those previously available through West Marine by Aqua Signal (and now available through West Marine in some brand I don't recognize), be retrofit with L.E.D. bulbs?
These AA-battery powered dinghy nav lights with mounting bracket options are good backups . . . But the standard bulbs go through batteries quickly.

Thanks, Larry! I wonder if the company that offers the L.E.D. lights available through Cabelas also offers L.E.D. bulbs that would fit the standard lights? The assemblies "appear" identical in every other way and I already have a set of the standard lights. --Craig ----- Original Message ----- From: Larry E Yake To: chonshell@ia4u.net ; montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com Sent: Saturday, March 26, 2005 6:52 PM Subject: L.E.D. Craig, You can also get LED portable lights from Defender (page 321 of their new catalog or on line). They are made by Innovative Lighting. The catalog lists a krypton replacement bulb as well as an LED replacement which suggests to me that you might be able to retrofit a standard fixture w/ LEDs. BTW, the clamp mounts on these things are not the greatest quality and unless they are mounted on a nice square board (not a sloping fiberglass deck edge or steel rail), I wouldn't trust them to stay put for long. George, I bought a set, too. I like the lights a lot. The stern light makes a great (not legal) anchor light and burns for many nights on a set of AAs. But I second your opinion of the clamps. I need to kluge something together that is more secure (although probably ugly). Do you have the L.E.D. ones, Bill, or the krypton bulb ones? I priced the difference at Boater's World today, about $10.00 . . . But since I already have krypton bulb Aqua Signal versions, bow and stern, if it would be possible to just buy L.E.D. bulbs for them, instead of the entire assembly, I'd like to do that . . .
