Where is the best location for mounting a compass on a Montgomery 17? Type? We are thinking about a bulk head dual read card compass. At our local lake there is a Seaward Fox that has a compass on the port and starboard bulk head.
I have the Plastimo Contest mounted on the port side. My M17, #278 has a Plastimo Mini Contest mounted on the starboard bulkhead and a Standard Horizon knot meter mounted on the port side. The latter has never worked right, nor did the free replacement I got from SH. All things considered, would much rather have an intact bulkhead and hull bottom than a knot meter. GPS is much more functional. The Plastimo compass works well for heading, but just as important, angle of heel. On Dec 4, 2012, at 8:21 AM, Joe Murphy wrote:

I have a Ritchie Explorer V57. nice small compass that fits the size of the boat. comes in white or black. the compass is mounted on the starboard cockpit/cabin bulkhead, up high near the companionway. i like having a compass, but i don't use it much as if i'm navigating i likely use the GPS. it is a good backup to have as a GPS will fail before the earth's magnetic field ;-) to see a picture scroll down to the third photo on this linked www-page - http://m17-375.webs.com/docktonjuly09.htm another option is a hand bearing compass that you can also mount on the boat. a nice model is the Plastimo Iris 100. :: Dave Scobie :: M17 #375 SWEET PEA - www.m17-375.webs.com --- On Tue, 12/4/12, Karen Saville <karen.saville@yahoo.com> wrote:

We have the Plastimo Mini Contest on the port bulkhead. I must say I like the position of Dave's Ritchie, slightly higher up and closer to the companionway. Leaves the bulk head more clear for lounging. Had a handheld Plastimo Iris on our last boat, and it was a very good compass. You can mount it horizontally or vertically and use it as a hand bearing compass. 2 for 1! Sure miss sailing this time of year. :( Bill On Tue, Dec 4, 2012 at 10:28 AM, W David Scobie <wdscobie@yahoo.com> wrote:

I mounted a Plastimo 100 in the center of the sliding cabin top on my 18 ft Sandpiper. It is easily visible from either tack and can be quickley removed to lower/raise the mast or use as a handheld. This keeps the bulkhead clean for relaxation. Thanks Doug Kelch "Seas the Day" On Tue, Dec 4, 2012 at 6:40 AM, Karen Saville <karen.saville@yahoo.com>wrote:

My reason for doing it this way was: - I had good compass visibility while sitting on either cockpit seat: it was on the boat's centerline - There was nothing protruding from the aft cabin bulkhead when you wanted to lean there and relax. - It was easy to stow down below when we left the boat - Since it was under the teak board located in front of the companionway, there was very little danger of stepping on it. - We lived with that arrangement for as long as we owned our M15. It worked to our satisfaction. Connie ex M15 #400 LEPPO
