I've sailed with 4 adults for an afternoon....it's okay, but not something I'd want to do on a regular basis. But then, there are only a few nice boats that I can think of that have large enough cockpits for 4 comfortably and none are really on the order of the Montgomery 17. Most are daysailors such as the 20' centerboarder Highlander with 9' cockpit seats or something like the old Pearson Ensign or the Colgate 26 keelboat. Tod 4*175#=700#, a lot of weight (and volume) in the back half of a 1,600# boat.

No one wants to field this one? The M17 has an L.W.L. of 15' 10" . . . The M17 displaces 1,550 lbs . . . The Flicka 20' has an L.W.L. of 18' 2" . . . The Flicka 20' displaces 6,000 lbs . . . I know the Flicka has the L.W.L. advantage, speed-wise, but that WEIGHT . . . And it's reported that M17's can outrun Catalina 22's . . .

I did, and he won . . . :-) HOWEVER, my jib is a 110% that has been downsized slightly to fit a CDI Flexible Furler foil . . . My partner had the 120% out . . . My outboard was trailing in the water . . . I know very little about attaining the most efficient sail trim . . . I don't think we were evenly matched . . . That's cool, Rik. I've read the PS Flicka 20' is faster than anyone would expect her to be. She looked very graceful under sail from my M17 vantage-point. :-) Prior, I'd only ever seen her from shore under power . . .
