Tom, I don't know much about the swaging process either, but if you end up short on your backstay you could add a toggle to make up the difference. Larry On Sat, 16 Jul 2011 16:59:18 -0700 Tom Jenkins <tjenk@gte.net> writes:
Gang, I have never done swaging or watched the process, so I have to ask an ignorant question (actually, a question means one is ignorant about
something, I suppose). I need to put a new fitting at the end a stay, but cutting the old fitting off and re-swaging will make the
wire too short. Is it possible to remove a swaged fitting without
wrecking the wire, or perhaps not put the wire all the way into the
new fitting so it won't use so much? The fitting will take 1 3/4" of wire, but I would like to use only 1". Thanks, Tom Jenkins

Larry, Thanks, Larry. I just happen to have a spare toggle that will fit nicely at the masthead; nice to have another option. The San Juan trip is starting to wear off; got to get the upgrades finished and get back in the water. Tom On Jul 16, 2011, at 6:05 PM, Larry E Yake wrote:

Save them old cast-iron CB's. They'll be w2orth their weight in gold sometime. I have a virgin iron board for a 23, by the way. Been dragging it around for 25 years! jerry ----- Original Message ----- From: "Stan Susman" <stanpfa@pacbell.net> To: "For and about Montgomery Sailboats" <montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Sunday, July 17, 2011 11:15 AM Subject: Re: M_Boats: M-17 cb

The only time I did my own swaging (at West Marine on my own due to liability) you really need extra length (3-4 inches so you get the thimble in the right spot then clamp the cable in the thimble. I like to double swag. Put on the piece to be crimped. Lock it all down with vicegrips or the special clamp you made at home with your welder and cutter. Crimp the first piece nearest the thimble. Crimp it in the MIDDLE first. Crimp the rest of it on either side per piece. You will have three swaged crimps per piece. Do the same with the second piece. West Marine had the swaging tool there. If you want to get rid of excess use a dermal tool like you were doing brain surgery so the remaining shroud line does not get cut !!! Final thoughts, Have Mel at Morrison Marine do the job for you. Good guy....replaced my jammed CB from PO. ----LH -----Original Message----- From: montgomery_boats-bounces@mailman.xmission.com [mailto:montgomery_boats-bounces@mailman.xmission.com] On Behalf Of Tom Jenkins Sent: Sunday, July 17, 2011 9:29 AM To: For and about Montgomery Sailboats Subject: Re: M_Boats: (no subject) Larry, Thanks, Larry. Ask Morrison Marine in Sacramento. He will use caution when advising on forestays and shrouds. He did mine, but be dead certain of your measurements with the hardware plus the rake you want in the mast.
