Hello Robbin, The tiller splitting at the bracket mounting holes is a common problem. My M17 tiller suffered the same fate and I did epoxy repairs which works fine. I saw the problem coming down the road on the M23 tiller as well, so I rebuilt that area during the winter before it became worse. Knowing this potential weak spot, I now have constructed simple emergency tillers for both boats, and carry them on board at all times. My M17 emergency tiller was made from a blank ax handle replacement available at farm/fleet stores. Works great.
