Include me in the Catalina trip! My 3hp Evinrude pushes my M15 at 5.5 mph at 3/4 speed according to my GPS. So Catalina seems doable even for a "newbie". (Thanks for the advise about motoring Bob) The learning experience sounds great. I will need a better anchor however. I have a small West Marine type with a slip ring on the shank. The West Marine catalog says it's only good for a lunch stop. Any suggestions for a Catalina type anchorage? I'm up for Santa Cruz also, but I don't remember who was ready to be our "captain". I'll be happy to arrange these types of trips next year. Norm M15 #172
Hi Norm Your going to have a great time..! I think your anchor is fine. Most likely you will be rafted up along side several other boats, so I would consider some fenders and a supply of dock lines to tie up to other boats. You probably won't get to use your anchor. However you could make that anchor work better if you would add about 6 feet of chain to it. Keep the whole pile (anchor/chain/rode) in a plastic milk crate. Do you have a topping lift? The reason I ask is once your rafted up over at the island, you will want a boom tent for shade and the boom needs a topping lift for that. Also if you want me to check your boat, fix anything, have a cup of coffee just bring it by the boatshop on your way south. We're in Ontario, California. Speaking of milk crates, has anyone seen a good one lately? The one I use for BuscaBrisas' anchor is at least 15 yrs old and the plastic is showing signs of deterioration. The crates I have been seeing in stores doesn't have the relatively fine, finger-sized, grate type sides and bottom but instead has quite large holes that the rode wants to slip through. I've been thinking I may have to resort to drilling holes in a solid bin or maybe placing some sort of grating in the bottom of the bin to keep the anchor and rode up out of drainings.
