Hi all, Just curious what anyone has for a cunningham/downhaul setup on their M17. Pics if ya got 'em. Looked through pics I have saved from list, but nothing much shows that part of rig. Now that I have the mast gate I can use tack reefing lines easily. I had just been using one of those cleats for a downhaul line tied to eye on gooseneck. I see that in another pic someone posted long ago. But now I need a separate setup. Thinking of just putting another v-cleat further down the mast...nothing fancy, no racing setups with multiple blocks etc. Ideas welcome... thanks, John -- John Schinnerer - M.A., Whole Systems Design -------------------------------------------- - Eco-Living - Whole Systems Design Services People - Place - Learning - Integration john@eco-living.net - 510.982.1334 http://eco-living.net http://sociocracyconsulting.com
John. Tie a 3/16" line to one of the eye straps on the port side of the mast (ie, the ones used for the reefing lines). There is no concerns with load as the cunningham is used only when the sail isn't reefed. Run the line up through the cunningham grommet and down to a clamcleat. Use a CL211 aluminum cleat, not a plastic clamcleat. :: Dave Scobie :: M6'8" #650 :: SV SWALLOW - sv-swallow.com :: former owner M17 #375 SWEET PEA - m17-375.com :: former owner M15 #288 SCRED - www.freewebs.com/m15-named-scred/ On Sat, Jun 29, 2019, 10:10 AM John Schinnerer <john@eco-living.net> wrote:

Thanks Dave, that's more or less what I was thinking of doing, with a cleat down lower than the reefing cleats. Just curious what others have, if anything. cheers, John On 6/29/19 11:00 AM, Dave Scobie wrote:

John. My preference is to lead the cunningham aft. It is a nice to have this sail control easy to use from the cockpit. :: Dave Scobie :: M6'8" #650 :: SV SWALLOW - sv-swallow.com :: former owner M17 #375 SWEET PEA - m17-375.com :: former owner M15 #288 SCRED - www.freewebs.com/m15-named-scred/ On Sun, Jun 30, 2019, 10:32 AM John Schinnerer <john@eco-living.net> wrote:

I use a 4:1 tackle attached to the mast base and led back to the cockpit. I used 4:1 just because I already had the blocks. 3:1 or 2:1 would work just as well. The upper end has a “Cunningham hook” or “reef hook” that slips into the grommet. The nice thing about the removable hook is that I can take it out of the Cunningham cringle and use it in the reef cringles. Instead of reef hooks on the boom I just ease the main halyard to a predetermined position, put the Cunningham hook in the appropriate reef cringle, and give a little tug on the tail of the tackle to get the luff nice and tight. Thanks Henry! That's the "doh!" I was looking for...I forgot about using a reef hook on a cunningham/downhaul line. One hook and one relatively short line for tack grommet and all reef points. Great! Simpler than tack reef lines for each reef (especially the 2nd reef, on my sail anyhow). Just took the fixed reef hooks off my boom. For the time being I can try one of them (bolt hole is just big enough for 3/16" line). If it works out well I'll get a proper hook for use with line. Speaking of 2nd reefs...mine makes a super tiny sail. Smaller than my El Toro sail. Smaller than an Optimist even!! Somewhere around 30 sq ft. I don't really want to think how hard it would be blowing when I'd need that... :-O cheers, John On 6/30/19 11:44 AM, Henry Rodriguez wrote:

A Cunningham hook has a very deep U-section that helps to keep it from falling out when the sail is dropped and flaked. I believe they are also available with the attachment eye at right angles to the hook. Henry On Mon, Jul 1, 2019 at 8:19 PM John Schinnerer <john@eco-living.net> wrote:

I took a couple of pictures of my traveler set up the other day. I tried a 2:1 purchase at first but came to the conclusion that I need at least 3:1. I used single blocks on the cockpit wall because that is what I had on hand. Double blocks would be a little tidier. The ends of the control lines are semi-permanently tied together so it is easy to release the leeward side with a flick of the wrist while pulling the car to windward. I scored the Harken traveler car for about $20 on eBay but had to pay double that for their proprietary track. I also had to add the u-adapters to attach the becket blocks to the car.
