Has anyone used the Garmin 168 GPS Sounder?
I'm looking for a combination, GPS/depth/fishfinder. Has anyone tried the Garmin 168? Any other suggestions? Also, the 168 comes with an internal or external antenna. Any recommendations out which one to use? Happy New Year to all Monty's Norm M15 #172
I've got the 168 unit on Audasea. It has the internal antenna, which works even inside the cabin. No reason I can see to add the extra complication of an external antenna. The depth finder transducer is mounted inside the cabin under the v-berth. Glued to the bottom with silicone rubber. Works fine. An easy to read, easy to use unit. The only thing I didn't like about it was that it did not come installed with the NAVIADS. You have to buy the Maps and Waterways software and install those by regions. But once they are in there, they are very accurate. A seldom discussed, but really neat feature is the tide tables. On the Chesapeake, you can usually find a tide station within a few miles of your location, and it seems to be accurate. Should work the same elsewhere. For not much more money, they have a similar unit in color that may have better charting software. My brother in law had one of the new, smaller handheld units (don't know which number), with a color display. It had the Navaids and even depth contours built in...or at least installed. The 168, with same display information would be an ideal unit. Howard M17, #278 Audasea On 12/27/04 1:39 PM, "Norm Bundek" <nbundek@earthlink.net> wrote:
