A ny thoughts on how much ballast should be in M-15. I removed 150 lbs of steel punchings during keel surgery. I am thinking of replacing with 300 lbs of lead. This seem to be the amount used in the latest versions of M-15 Captain Jim Sailing vessel Pelican M-15 #205
Jim, The early Monty 15 came with 275 lbs of ballast with a CB of approx. 40 lbs. During my research and lurking here on the MSOG board I believe Jerry was quite please with the 275 lbs of ballast in the 15s. I believe only on the 23 did he feel that the boat was a bit too tender and needed a little extra weight. Sean is busy in the San Juan right now, but he would be a good resource since he spoke to Jerry when doing his ballast replacement. If your lucky, maybe Jerry or Bob with reply and give you the definitive answer. Also, keep in mind when adding the ballast and sealing it up with resin, to compensate for the additional weight of the resin. The smaller the boat the bigger the difference weight play. Also, keep it balanced from left to right. (Just my 2 cents worth) Man, I don't envy you. I noticed your boat is #205. I own #201, which means I might be spending this weekend checking out my CB. Jim- I watched the guys pretty carefully on things like that- are you sure that you caught all the removed ballast? Another thing; The 270 lbs included the trim ballast under the forward berth; it's the big lump just forward of the bulkhead but I think it was only about 50 lbs. Thanks Jerry Maybe I am missing some of the ballast. Is the trim ballast inside the hull or in the keel? It seem like I have removed all of the ballast in the keel. I haven't removed any from inside the cabin if ther is any there. Jim- I guess if you were happy with the characteristics of the boat before, I keep things about the same. I'm guessing that maybe you didn't measure all of the keel ballast, and I'd suggest that you put in about 225 to 250 lbs of lead to make it about the same as before. 300 lbs really wouldn't hurt, tho- it'd affect the light air performance just a bit, and help it in a blow. Have you ever loaded up the boat for a cruise; a hundred pounds of water stored really low in the boat, and maybe 50 lbs of other stuff, also stored low? I used to do this in Mexico, and the boat gets noticably stiffer (good for cruising) and maybe a bit sluggish in a drifter, but not all that much. Loaded up, it's well over it's designed dissplacement but it has the kind of lines that make it very forgiving to things like that. When the boat gets loaded up it really wants to carry the weight forward to keep the transom out of the water. When you get all this done, you might put your results and opinions on the board and share them with us. Well I have picked up all of the lead tire weights along the road side and also purchased 200 lbs of lead. I plan to cast the lead into two plates 7.5 x 32 x 1in. @ 710 lbs per cf each plate should weigh around 100 lbs. My idea is to embed two pieces of SS 3/8 in all-thread into each of the plates that would extend vertically out of the 1 in thick edge. I will install one of these lead plates on each side of the centerboard well and drill holes vertically through the bottom of the hull for the 3/8 SS rod. I will secure with nut and washer plate on the inside so the lead is "hanging like a pendulum" from the bottom of the hull. I will then proceed to patch the fiberglass and secure the lead (so the pendulum dosn't swing). By 4th of July I plan to bend on a drifter and get some way on.!
