Re: M_Boats: MOB plus - lifesling
I believe you would be hard pressed to 'hoist' a MOB into either a M-15 or M-17 with the boom - May be of assistance, and 1/2 way up is better than in the water! Would probably precipitate an even larger emergency in the form of capsize or 'self-induced recovery aided knockdown'- Make sure the gooseneck is secured so as to not slide up in the sail track at the mast when using you boom as a gin pole/crane. My suggestion for LS use is to get person back TO the boat and aid in recovery onto the boat - --My BoomKicker won't support me on the end of my boom! Heck my Boom won't support me if it was tied at the outboard end and the masthead with 3/8" line. Lifesling has more uses than hoisting. NFIW. Wear your lifejacket and go sailing! Two thoughts on (1) making an emergency lifesling, and (2) using the boom. An emergency lifesling can be put together quickly using the main hallyard. Tie a large double bowline. Make the double loops about 3' in diameter. Lower into the water and have the MOB put it over their shoulders; have them slip one loop under their legs around the knees and the second loop up under the arms. This forms a cradle similar to picking up an infant to carry them to bed; one arm under the legs and one around the shouldlers/back. Just like an infant holding their hands around daddy's neck; the MOB just lays back and holds onto the knot. Then the process of hauling them up. This is where (2) using the boom comes into play. Rather than using the boom to lift, use the topping lift to keep the boom stationary at a height of 6' over the cockpit. Then using a 4 part purchase tackle attach one end to the end of the boom and one end to the bowline knot on the main halyard. Pull on the tackle to lift the MOB. At the same time someone belays the main halyard. The halyard must be run through the end of the boom as well. Between the topping lift and the main halyard, there should be enough strength to haul out just about anyone. I carry the 4 part tackle that I use for raising the mast. Rather than leaving it in the truck, I figured it could be a handy thing to keep on board. Hello All, I have never really seen a lifesling in use but couldn't you just attach it to your mail halyard and winch the person in? Ian M-17 The mighty "Seaweeble"
