Hi all, Posting this for Keith K, who is having some kind of trouble posting to the list at the moment. His question is: "Have other M owners put sacrificial zincs/aluminum on there boats? If so where? My boat stays on a mooring now for 4-5 months, full on salt water." cheers, John -- John Schinnerer - M.A., Whole Systems Design -------------------------------------------- - Eco-Living - Whole Systems Design Services People - Place - Learning - Integration john@eco-living.net - 510.982.1334 http://eco-living.net http://sociocracyconsulting.com

Yeah my Honda 2.3 has its own little zinc...cute! My take is, there's nothing on my M17 hull that would need a zinc. The only part that isn't fiberglass that is in the water all the time (besides the CB) is the cockpit drain thru-hull tube, which if OEM is aluminum and has no connection to any other metal on the boat. There's no metal thru-hull valves/fittings/parts (bilge draining, engine cooling, prop shaft housings, etc.) on our boats like on some bigger boats. Those are what typically get wired to a sacrificial zinc. If one has added stuff like that, then there might be benefit to tying it to a zinc, for a boat sitting in saltwater for a while. Even more so if it's in mixed/brackish water, which I learned in Hawai'i is even harder on metal than straight seawater. cheers, John On 2/8/23 17:41, Dave Scobie wrote:

I'm assuming he has a cast iron centerboard? My Catalina 22 also has an iron swing keel, and I installed this on it after drilling and tapping holes in the keel: https://www.catalinadirect.com/shop-by-boat/catalina-25/hull-deck/maintenanc... If there isn't clearance for one that large, you can get small zincs made for outboards. Yeah the CB would be the only thing...but on our boats the only potential galvanic interaction would be the cast iron CB and the stainless bolt it pivots on. And stainless pennant shackle I guess, but our pennants are fabric rope, not wire rope. Except on M23s with the wire rope & winch heavy CB raising tackle! Regardless, would a zinc on CB help reduce eventual rusting on the cast iron CB? cheers, John On 2/8/23 17:51, casioqv@usermail.com wrote:
