Montgomery 15 Questions, esp. where to get a rudder
Hi all, I recently purchased a M-15 and have really enjoyed learning to sail on this great boat. Unfortunately someone stole my rudder. I’ve been hoping to get it back (I’ve been keeping an eye out on Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, and E-bay but I’ve not seen it yet). So, I’m looking for a replacement. I checked out Rudder Craft; seems like they have a nice rudder for an M-15 but they are pricey AND not the beautiful mahogany rudder my boat had originally. Any advice/recommendations will be appreciated. Mike Britten 720-561-0771 Sent from Mail<https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=550986> for Windows
Are you up to building one Mike? I’ve used Ruddercraft ( formerly IdaSail) and the rudder was great. On this site the newer ones have mixed reviews. If you build, foil shape is very important. I’m sure Dave Scobie will weigh in, he is a great resource. Ed M15 375 Murrelet Sent from my iPhone

I put rudder inside the cabin of my M-15 and use a simple hasp and padlock to secure the hatchboards and cabin. Check with your insurance about your rudder replacement cost. I haven’t checked with insurance company yet, good idea. I was careless, I usually lock it in the cabin but I already had so much in the cabin that I left it out. That won’t happen again. Check out Bobby's Boat Works about possibly building a factory-like wood replacement https://www.bobbysboatworks.com/ I wouldn't personally go for an idasailor replacement, it doesn't have as sleek of a kick-up mechanism, and it's not as tough. For inland sailing it is okay, but the HDPE rudder blades have been known to fail in rough seas. Mike. There is no source for the cheeks and the bits internal kickup assembly. Contact RudderCraft and get the fiberglass foil (rudder). I don't recommend the HDPE version as they ALL warp and many have broken. :: Dave Scobie :: M6'8" #650 :: Baba 30 #233 DEJA VU :: SV SWALLOW - sv-swallow.com :: former owner M17 #375 SWEET PEA - m17-375.com :: former owner M15 #288 SCRED - m15namedscred.wordpress.com <<-- new site!
