What are you skippers using for a compass? Are you mounting it flush next to the companion way? How is it illuminated? Thanks Captain Jim Sadler Skipper Sailing vessel Pelican M-15
I have a hand-bearing compass that also has a mount; but a GPS is cheaper and more useful. The combination of the two is useful when current is an issue. --Gary Hyde 2005 M17 sailboat #637 'Hydeaway 2' We can't change the wind, but we can trim our sails. Thanks Skipper I am thinking about sailing at night. Do you use the GPS to hold a course? Does it have a light the you can see. Captain Jim Sailing vessel Pelican M-15 On 8/30/07, Gary M Hyde <gmhyde1@mac.com> wrote:

Jim, I bought a Nexus 70 UNE (made by Silva) handbearing/steering compass. It is lighted (red light) by built in batteries and can be mounted vertically or horizontally (even upside down) by a small bracket. I attached the bracket a small block of teak, and then connected that block to an identical block with SS bolts, using wing nuts on the ends of the bolts opposite the heads. I can mount the contraption to the top of the lower hatch board or the vertical section of the companionway slide of my new little M15 ("Spirit") by sandwiching either the hatch board or the slide with the teak blocks and tightening up on the wing nuts to keep it all in place. For use as a bearings compass, you just pull the compass itself out of its little bracket. Ron Casino --- Jim Sadler <jimsadler@jascopacific.com> wrote:

I have a Ritchie Angler type compass mounted on the bottom centerboard piece just below the stepboard into the cabin. It's out of the way, doesn't interfere with anything and i can see it on both tacks while sailing. You'll need an 90 deg angled drill to make those two screw holes though.
