I've stripped the crumby bottom paint of the M17 over the winter, and now I'm thining the topside needs to be freshen up as well (the deck is next winter's project, along with filling, re-drilling etc.). I plan to use VC High Performance Epoxy on the bottom, but don't know exactly what to use above the waterline. I've looked at the specs on Interlux Perfection, and it looks good (and reports have been good on the M list too). It looks like there's special paint for waterlines too. I hear that if you don't keep the boat in the water, you can use almost anything for that. Any opinions? Thanks. t Tom Smith & Jane VanWinkle M15/345--Chukar M17/064--Unamed
Tom- Any good automotive-type 2-part polyurethane enamel would be fine; if Deltron, by PPG, is available in your area (stores catering to the auto trade), it's the best, especially for boats that sit in the sun forever- Oh, I forgot, you don't get much sun in your part of the country. I've been trying to figure out where to mount a depth sounder on my M15. I've had trouble before on another boat with the keel masking the signal when the boat was heeled over but I can't see a good place ahead or behind the keel. The area just ahead of the keel appears to be very very thick and I don't think behind the keel would leave the thing accessible. Where have people mounted transponders successfully? Thanks, Norm Lane
Norm, Living in landlocked Pittsburgh, I don't sail my 15 enough to justify a wet cell electrical system. But I found a fish finder, Pirhana 1 by Hummingbird, that works on AA cells. Amazingly, it will run many hours (20-30+) on a set of batteries (4, I think.) The transducer hangs from a suction cup that mounts on the transom beside, or right ahead of the rudder. No problems when heeling. No holes in the boat. Great performance. Low cost, about $125. Everyone has their winners and losers. The Pirhana 1 is definitely one of my winners.
