I'm going to install spinnaker hardware this winter, and would welcome opinions/recommendations on brand, sizing and install location from M17 owners. I'm not interested in cruising spinnakers. I want the total "Holy Sh*t!!" experience only a genuine pole-induced death roll can provide. Thanks. tom
Hi Tom. I set up my M17 (PUFF) for a symetrical spinner and have used it for a coupla seasons now. A list of stuff. A pole: I use an adjustable forespar that might be meant as just a whisker pole....but once I attached a pull line to the outboard clasp it works perfectly as a spinpole. A tad heavy perhaps, but no worries. Works very well as a whiskey pole too of course. I have no clue if all M17 come with the vert sliding ring car on track on the forward edge of the mast. If you don't have that, you will need it to adjust pole height at the mast. Then you need to set up a spin halyard by adding a sheave at the masthead. There was a good spot for one up there on mine. I do want to modify this and get it further away from the mast eventually. I run the spin hal to a turning block and back to the cockpit. For a coupla reasons; I hoist the spinner from there plus I want to be able to retrieve from the cockpit and bring the sail down in through the main hatchway. Also this is handy for a quick dowse if over powered. My boat is set up for single handing. Because I usually fly the big kite solo, I avoid the... total "Holy Sh*t!!" experience....by usually taking it down in anything over 6-7 knots....unless my heading is dead downhill.....but even then my area is prone to radical and sudden shifts. I run all the spinner control lines back to the cockpit and their own respective cleats. You will need to add a small bock about 2/3rds of the way up the mast for a pole uphaul. I used a RL-318 Spin Strap from Race Lite and rivets to attach it to the mast.... then added a wee block. Any pad eye should do fine. I like to use a pole downhaul as well, but I just use the headsail downhaul for that. That about covers all your controls unless you want sperate sheets blocks on the rail.....and twingers as well. I leave the sheets on the sail, colour coded. I use all good quality 1/8th line for pretty well everything to do with the kite. Size-wise I can't really help you. I use an old spinner a buddy gave me. I removed the last lowest section and it was a perfect size for me....I also have another old one from a Thistle that is smaller but has a much better shape that is nice for stronger winds...I like the colour better too. ~:0) BTW, the only way I can fly the big bag by myself is because of Otto. He drives. Have fun. Thanks for the reply Tim. Can you provide me with the track size and brand and car and or slider brand and part numbers by any chance? I can probably figure this all out (an older M17 I used to own was equipped with this stuff, unfortunately I didn't write any of it down), but I'm lazy. tom
Hi Tom, Never having used any of this equipment, I wonder if this is similar to the parts added to the new Strawanza? A photo is about 3/4 of the page down on the far right. If so, Bob E. may have the PN's on hand. http://www.msogphotosite.com/mpage.html Got to have photos of the finished product to add to your album! Thanks for the suggestion Bill. I'll check that out. I'll email Bob and see if he has part numbers for those bits at his finger tips too. Good to hear from you. The website looks great. t
