Jib Downhaul & Reefing
To All, Does anyone have a write-up on the Jib downhaul and reefing rigging for the M-15? I found the rigging write-up on the MSOG, however, my boat does not have the jib downhaul or reefing option. I was hoping someone had pictures showing how the whole assembly is rigged. I have a pretty good idea of how it works, I just need a few pictures of the hardware and the placement of said hardware. Also, if you could include the size and style of each piece of the hardware, that would be helpful. Thanks in Advance, Skip #201 M-15 1982 For anyone who cares........... I had planned on naming my boat 'Brandy'.........however.........my brothers had other thoughts!! (I won't tell you what they thought of the name I chose) Both of my brothers own bikes (Harley Davidson) and have been after me to purchase one so we all could ride together, instead, I ended up buying an M-15. Well, after we all saw the movie "Wild Hogs" a couple of weeks back, they decided to start calling my boat 'Wild Guppy'. I think the name has stuck!! I hate being the youngest!!! ________________________________________________________________________ AOL now offers free email to everyone. Find out more about what's free from AOL at AOL.com.

(i learned to set a reef when i was ten yrs. old (on a neptune 24 actually) so the process is second nature.) i'll not be lifting the mast of the boat for another two weeks (taking a trip on the land yacht this weekend). if you can wait until the last week of april or first week of may i can share some pictures of my M15's main reefing system (just the standard single reef, nothing fancy). david scobie M15 #288 (not yet named) wcampion@aol.com wrote: To All, Does anyone have a write-up on the Jib downhaul and reefing rigging for the M-15? Wow, that Gerr downhaul looks complicated . Has anybody ever done that? I see how it works, but I'd think there would be significant friction/resistance using the rings. I'd also think just gathering the foresail to the stay would create quite a bit of windage. Any other thoughts, or better yet, is anyone doing this? t On 4/11/07, W David Scobie <wdscobie@yahoo.com> wrote:

I spoke with my sail maker about this - she advised against it - too complex... cheers- Shawn Boles Grey Mist (M17 #276 1978) -----Original Message----- From: montgomery_boats-bounces+shawn=ori.org@mailman.xmission.com [mailto:montgomery_boats-bounces+shawn=ori.org@mailman.xmission.com] On Behalf Of Tom Smith Sent: Thursday, April 12, 2007 12:03 PM To: For and about Montgomery Sailboats Subject: Re: M_Boats: Jib Downhaul & Reefin Wow, that Gerr downhaul looks complicated . I just use a line secured to the top shackle on the jib and then through a block secured to the stemhead and then through a fairlead on the cabin top.........works fine, every time..... BTW,,,,has anybody suspended an M17 by the aluminum toe rails ?.....or is it saver to use the chainplates.......I need to lift mine off the trailer to check the CB and repaint the bottom. I have used the toe rails. Works fine. I'll send you a pm with a pic. t -- Tom & Jane M17 dharma bum
I also use a simple system. It works every time, with any of the headsails I use. 1/8" line with a simple clip to either the first (or last....however you see it) jib hank (at the head of the sail of course) or the grommet in the luff for the hank. The line runs down to a small bock attached at the bow fitting. I have seen where some folks run this line captured inside the hanks. I am sure this is over complicating the deal. Just on the outside loose is totally fine....I keep the slack out of it at all times. Then from that small turning block at the stem head fitting to a set of stanchion mounted fairleads and back to a swivel cleat on the cockpit coming. This system does double duty as my spinpole downhaul. It works fast and slick.
Hi Folks, We took delivery of Lily from Bob last August, and enjoyed an abbreviated sailing season on Long Island Sound before closing up for the winter. She looks and sails great, thanks Bob! In the midst of preparations to launch her this spring for her first full season of sailing from New London, CT, our lives were upended by a corporate "rightsizing". The new job takes us to San Diego, so I'm interested in getting in touch with owners out that way. Please give me a shout! Matt Marx matthew.a.marx@myeastern.com Lily M17 # 636
On your way to the left coast, stop by and have a sail in Lake Michigan! Joe Moore M15 #641 On 4/21/07 8:08 PM, "Matthew Marx" <matthew.a.marx@myeastern.com> wrote:
