Re: M_Boats: Montgomery 17 rudders
The Ida Sailor rudder is heavy until you get it in the water. Then it's neutral buoyant. The rounded leading edge apparently prevents "tip drag". "A performance increase can be had by going with an elliptical tip - this can be done with either an elliptical leading edge or trailing edge while keeping the opposite edge straight (or the tip can be fully elliptical). The performance increase comes from the increased lift and reduced drag from this shape - with a rectangular tip, water can 'escape' by going around the bottom of the foil rather than across the chord, while with an ellipse** its always a shorter path across the chord than it is around the bottom." This quote is from the Foil Design Tips article by Phil's Foils and Composites. Larry On Tue, 13 Dec 2005 18:54:03 -0600 "Gilbert Landin" <gilbert@mindgame.com> writes:
Dang Tom, the ida sailor rudder is heavier than the mahagony? That was a surprise!
My straight rudder is squared off at the bottom w/o much rounding.

I figured out a good way to make pics available to you M viewers without choking you with data. When you go to the link below, you'll will see my collection of M17 rudders and a brief description of each. The '75 undershot rudder was just repaired--you can see the light colored mahagony strip that was added because of damage caused by hard grounding.

All rudders are oriented with trailing edge facing right side of photo.
