I have a small leak at the mast step and was wondering if it is sufficiant to reseal under it with silicone caulking or should I use some other product. Thanks for any info anyone has. Jerry M17 333 Mystic -- JD
When you get the bolts out, check to see if water has crept into the balsa core below the mast step. Mine had...but not bad. I drilled them out to 3/8" on top and 1/2" on the bottom, then used a Dremel tool with small saw blade to ream out the balsa core....then backfilled with thickened epoxy mix to seal it. Reaming out the hole creates an epoxy "spacer" between the cores to cut down on compression damage when you put the bolts back in. And do bed with Boatlife. Really messy stuff, but it works. I've had no more leaks. Howard On 11/13/02 6:19 PM, "Jerry Duke" <jrduke1@dslextreme.com> wrote:

Jerry, Yes do reseal, no don't use a silcone. Try one of the polysulfides like boatlife. Also, check for rot in the core. You might have to clean it out, then replace with an epoxy pour.
