Hello Listers, I agree with CDF and Sean's logic regarding this whole discussion. Both devices have their advantages and your boat should be equipped with a compass and GPS. I have seen one of the nicer chartplotter style Garmin color units in operation while on a 25 foot powerboat in the lower Keys. The small channels, islands, and shoals in the area really demonstrate the usefulness of a constantly updating GPS. But, like the Linn and Larry mantra of a sailor being able to repair any item onboard, you are not going to be repairing a microprocessor, surface-mount component GPS with your butane soldering pencil at sea. Bottom line, practice and know how to use both, and keep charts on board. Merry Christmas all! Bones
