Re: M_Boats: Seafoaming at the mouth!
After I had had my brand new 4hp 2 stroke about two years it gummed up and stopped on me. That is when I learned about not leaving gas in the carb of a two stroke while it is being stored. I used a whole can of spray carb cleaner on it, sprayed gradually through the air intake; just enough to keep it sputtering along. After it kept running without being sprayed I took it out for some long runs to complete the job. Now I run the carb dry by shutting off the gas line a few minutes before coming in and let the engine run till it quits. I haven't had a problem since and I think that was about 1990. Todd, It worked! I put a bit of gas in the "hole", tightened up the plug, gave her a pull and she sputtered a bit until the fuel i put in burnt and then... nothing. So, here's the next question... carbeurator cleaner... do i have to take anything apart in the carbeurator to do that or (and don't laugh here, i am afraid i am serious) can i spray it directly into the air intake (looks like a wire mesh sort of air cleaner deal)? Jeff htmills@zoominternet.net wrote: When you had the plug out, did you check to see if you had a good spark? With the plug out, put the wire on it, touch the threaded part of the plug to a metal part of the outboard, and pull. (you might need a helper). Just keep your fingers back on the rubber wire cover so as not to get bitten. If it has a good spark, you could put a half-teaspoon of gas or a quick shot of carb cleaner in before replacing the plug. Then see if it will fire. If it does, then you know it's probably a plugged jet or miss-adjustment.... Well, i put some Seafoam in the gas tank and couldn't get the engine to turn over. I inspected the plug and (mind you i am no mechanic) it looked a bit oily for such a new engine... i have probably less than 10 hours on it in a years time... the plug was not crusty or anything, just dark... i emory clothed it clean at the tip and reinstalled it. It seems to me that if i could get it to turn over just a bit it would limp along until the Seafoam started working. What would happen if i put some gas in the spark plug "hole" (told ya i was no mechanic)? Any suggestions? _______________________________________________ http://mailman.xmission.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/montgomery_boats No virus found in this incoming message. Starter fluid fired up the motor but when it was spent nothing else occurred... time after time after time (i have the blistered finger to prove it). So off to the shop I went... he told me that in this heat that it can take only 15 days or so to "varnish" the fuel. My boat has sat no more than 2 months at a time since i first purchased this motor last year. (incidentally, i was told long ago that a "motor" was electric and anything run with internal combustion was an "engine" but i am going with the flow... even the outboard people refer to them as motors so motor it is) Fuel stabilizer and use of fuel shut-off valve after every voyage from now on. Thanks all for your help... Sean, nice vids... Scott, when's that maiden voyage in the bay suppose to occur?
