Re: M_Boats: Centerboard trials and tribulations
Jerry, what in your opinion would be the better board? I was suprised a few months ago by your comments regarding the shape of the rudder being so critical; does this also apply to the board shape? How would the weight difference change the sailing characteristics of the boat? I had the cast iron board removed, sandblasted, and painted when I first bought Wild Hare, but would still be interested in an improved model.
Hi- The shape of the cb is much less critical than that of the rudder because of aspect ratio, but the cb should still have a reasonably blunt elliptical entry and fine, non-rounded exit. Don't get me wrong about the new replacement centerboards. These are not "improved"; they are are meant only as replacements for lost or damaged boards, or, if they are made thinner they should ease the pain on boats that have swollen trunks. For how long, I don't know because if the leaks in the boats with rusty ballast are not fixed they will probably continue to swell. If your iron board works, use it.
