I would get some expert advice before I attempted to suspend an M-17 by either the alum. toe rails or the chain plates, I am relatively sure that neither were designed for that purpose. . Even totally unloaded my 17 weights in at about 1500 lbs and I personally would not try either method but rather would lift with hull slings and chain falls designed for the weight. I plan to pull my centerboard next month and have arranged with the local boatyard to lift the boat to a cradle for the work. What ever you do however make sure the boat is secured by failsafe methods before you work under it. Kind regards and good sailing..Arnold Apr 12, 2007, at 5:11 PM, Larry E Yake wrote:

Respectfully disagree. I and others (including Jerry Montgomery) have used the toe rails to lift the older M17 successfully and safely for years. t On 4/13/07, Arnold Sharpe <afsharpe@mac.com> wrote:

I would certainly consider Jerry Montgomery an expert and therefore disregards my concerns. Further to my "project": my Montgomery 17 (a 1977 model) has a stuck centerboard which I want to free up and rebuild. I found a good article in the last issue of "Small Craft Advisor" which gives me some help however i need a little more info. How much ground clearance below the keel will I need to remove the c-board? I will be temporarily support the boat in a home built cradle but need to design it with adaquate ground clearance. Additionally, I read where the 79 Monty had a cast iron keel, what should i expect on my 1977 Monty? Thanks...Arnold On Apr 13, 2007, at 9:23 AM, Tom Smith wrote:

Arnold- I'd guess that you'd need about 24" to drop the board out. Best way would be to find a way to lift the boat but first let it set on it's keel, remove the pivot pin and the keeper bolt or pin, then just lift the boat straight up and let the board remain on the plywood or whatever it's resting on. Concrete would be fine but I don't know if it would be good for the boaard to flop over onto cement- might crack it. Plywood wouldn't be a problem.
