Hello All, In three weeks I will be heading off for a two week cruise around Isle Royale with my two daughters who are 6 and 7 years old. We did a 3 1/2 day shake down cruise a couple of weeks ago and apart from the vomiting, burnt finger, and falling off the dock into the water I would have to say it was a success... Besides improved safety, my plan for the trip is to have plenty to occupy them and to sail every other day around the island so that there is plenty of time for beach combing and other fun stuff. Has anyone else sailed on longer cruises with their kids? Any advice? Respectfully, John M-15 Jester
Maybe a couple of books and crayons/paper?

Hi John, Have a bag of small line / twine so that the children can learn knotting / and show them how to do some fancy knot work. Eventually our children made themselves belts, necklaces, and had something "that they made themselves" to show off when they were back at school. They had become "old salts". School one-upsmanship. They also had stories to tell about their adventures, and learned geography in the process. Our children in that age never were bored while on the boat. There was alway something new to see. Porpoises, leather turtles; shark fins showing above the water surface; monarch butterflies passing us on their migration south many miles from land; fishing boats trawling; the passing ferries or the tug with a tow of barges; freighters...... and if there was a moment of boredom, they retired to the cabin and stuck their noses into their books (we always had a supply of books for them). If it rained, we sat in the cabin and talked; did handicrafts; and became much more connected to one another than if we had been at home in our house, where everyone could disappear into their own sphere and not be seen for hours. A hand held fishing line that they can drop over the side while at anchor also keeps them busy. You'll be surprised at the games and entertainment the children can create on a small vessel; such as just bouncing on a fender that is tied to the railing. There are also a number of cruising books where the parents had small children, which will give you additional information on what they did to keep their children busy. Connie
Put them in life jackets and tow them behind the boat. When they get tired and let go, you can practice your mob routine. Seriously, my kids loved to do that. And also they like jumping off the boat and I'd come around and pick them up. Jeez, they'd turn blue doing that... t
John, Years ago when we made short cruises in our Balboa 20 with our 3 young children we carried along several items to keep them entertained. While underway, they had books, magnetic board games and art supplies to entertain themselves and fishing lines to troll with. When we anchored at out destination, we broke out the "Science Kits" which consisted of dip nets, buckets, underwater viewers, magnifying glasses and a cheap microscope. They spent many happy hours gathering specimens, examining them and drawing pictures of their finds. Today, I would include inexpensive digital cameras and an old laptop for displaying the pictures. Gameboys are great to occupy the "Quite time" after dark. A portable DVD palyer and a selection of movies might be a consideration if there was sufficient battery power to handle it. A solar panel shoud provide enough charge to allow a "bedtime movie". Best of all was having time to really listen to what they had to say and get to really know them. These days, we are enjoying our Grandkids in the same way. Whitebeard, M17 #14, Griselda

John, Sounds to me like you already have it pretty well figured out. I just got back from a multi-day trip with my 4 year old daughter and while we sailed every day, like you, I made time to do her favorite shore side activities. I spend a lot of time introducing her to the aquatic world through insects, fish, clams, plants etcetera when beached or anchored. Taking a small dip net is great. I engage her with birds and such while sailing. In my experience kids loves that stuff. While sailing she has the run of the boat, which she enjoys. Teaming up with other parents and their kidlets on small sailboats is a sure fire winner - if you can make it happen. I think the M-15 is terrific for kids. I just make the focus of the trip my daughter, and use the boat to transport us around - with reasonably extended passages when the sailing is good :) I hope you can report back on your success!
