Coming from years of field service in the UPS power supply business, I can attest to the performance and longevity of AGM batteries. They will easily last 5 years IF floated correctly (charged at no more than a tenth of it's amp-hour rating and a cut-off voltage of 14.1 VDC) and assuming the battery from a quality manufacturer was purchased. The brands I used and recommended are:

C + D Dynasty (Johnson Control) Yuasa-Enersys Panasonic GNB

Never buy cheap batteries, or ones with old date codes. As the Brits say, it's false economy.

I use a 31ah AGM in my M17, I used a group 24 in my M23. I have a 30 watt solar panel and regulator.

I'm following the Lithium discussion as well, the jury is still out. They need to prove themselves in the field, where reputations are years in the making.
