I have a Honda 5 hp on my 17 and yesterday she started up on the first pull and ran real nice for about 10 minutes then she lost power and died. I realized she was not getting fuel and I had to continually pump the bulb to get her gas. The vent cap was open and we had fresh fuel. Every year the engine is maintained by the Honda dealer and she had new fuel filter, they cleaned the carb and do whatever is needed to insure a smooth running engine. I spent about $250 this past winter to update some parts, new plug, winterizing etc. I then noticed the throttle would not move past the start position. I could get it to the start position and move her back down to the slow position but I could not get her to throttle up. Any ideas on why she would not suck fuel and what could be preventing the throttle for moving? Gary, The first things that come to my mind are: For the power loss and dying, a leak where the fuel line plugs into the gas tank or the motor. One day I had those exact symptoms and the problem was just that simple. I thought for sure I had them plugged in fully but they weren't seated and allowed air to be drawn in to the system. First I'd double-check that and then if that doesn't do it, borrow someone else's hose. For the throttle thing, on my Honda 5, there is a safety mechanism where if the shifter is not in forward, some linkage prevents the throttle from turning fully. Perhaps there is a mis-adjustment that is making the thing not realize it is in forward. When you shift from reverse to neutral to forward, a bow-shaped (bow and arrow) piece pushes up on rod that comes down from the throttle mechanism. On the bottom of the rod is a locknut and a long custom nut. If those have vibrated off or something, the bow-shaped piece won't be able to push the rod up. I'd first look at that and see what it looks like and if it appears to work correctly. Great to hear about your sail; I haven't been out yet, unfortunately. Tod M17 #408 BuscaBrisas
Gary, I experienced that problem, and it also was caused by a leak at the hose to engine connection. There was no gas leaking but the engine was sucking air into the line. For some reason, it seems harder to seal a vacuum line than a pressure line. I fixed it by replacing the O-ring in the female side if the connector. Hope you and Tod have a great season.
