I have always been curious about San Felipe. Anybody ever cruise out of there? I remember hearing some years ago it was popular for people who sailed catamarans right off the beach, but what about keelboats and launch facilities? Are we talkin' the Mexican "Wild, Wild, West" along the lines of Sean's concerns, or is it more touristy or gentrified like Cabo? Cabo is the only place other than a 1/2 day in TJ--ugh--that I have been in Baja. I only ask because it looks like the shortest, most direct drive from the U.S. to the Gulf of Mexico. Thanks, Neil
Neil, Like Sean, I have no opinions on the subject, but San Felipe has huge tides, and is monster hot in the summer and windy cool in the winter and spring; the Norte winds are something to behold. I say drive fast from the border to at least Bahia Concepcion, then cruise south to La Paz or the East Cape, and take one of their nice buses north to get your tow vehicle (a friend of mine did it with a kayak and had a ball); shun San Jose del Cabo to Cabo San Lucas. Bahia Magdalena on the west coast is like San Francisco Bay without San Francisco, but it has been 15 years since I stopped there on my cruise south, and it might have changed. The mainland coast south to Guaymas is beautiful, but there is something vaguely unsettling about the drive from Nogales (too many Federales with M16's?).
