A group of Monty sailors will be headed down Mexico way for the San Carlos Regatta. Following the regatta we will be cruising on the Sea of Cortez for a week or two. We plan on meeting up in Tucson, Arizona at the end of October and to caravan down to San Carlos. Anyone interested in joining us would be most welcome. I've been following the Monty discussions for two years, when I started looking for a Monty. I couldn't find a good Monty and wound up finding a Precision 18, somewhat similar to a Monty 17 but made in Florida and not too common in the West. My wife and I are interested to know if we would be welcome at the San Carlos Regatta and cruising the Sea of Cortez in the San Carlos vicinity. We are day sailors and racers and don't have much cruising experience. Do you plan to base camp in San Carlos at lodging spots or live aboard? Are overnight cruises planned? Is dock space available for a week or so? Anything else we should know about this adventure? We have heard the Sea of Cortez is good sailing and are intrigued but need to know if we would be welcome and just what to expect. Thanks, Dennis Olmstead Portland, OR Sent from my iPad

You will certainly be welcome at our fall regatta. Dock space is readily available. Most get hotel rooms, priced from low to high. I assume Paul Bear is going. He will probably respond to you also. You can call me directly, I can answer the more complicated questions. 520-991-7650 Anytime. Bill Ahrens W. A. Ahrens & Associates

Dennis, I had my boat in a slip and in the Marina Seca dry storage area for a couple of years, and found the setting much to my liking. There is great cruising territory for small boats to the north and on west to the islands and mainland Baja. I never did much daysailing down there, but Ensenada San Francisco and Bahia de Bacochibampo looked like a barrel of fun. I saw an American on an skiff with a sailfish nearly as big as his boat, evidently caught in the Ensenada. On Sep 14, 2014, at 5:57 PM, Dennis Olmstead <dennis.olmstead@comcast.net> wrote:

Hey Dennis, The San Carlos regatta will have fleets to fit all comers, you would be most welcome to join in. Also the cruise will be set up to accommodate the different cruising styles. There will be long and short distant cruising fleets, as well as day sailing. On the Monday after the regatta the cruising boats will depart from San Carlos and rendezvous up the coast at Bahia San Pedro. After anchoring for the night the long distance boats will cross over the Sea of Cortez to Santa Rosalia and then spend a couple of weeks or more cruising the Baja coast. The short distance boats will go North from San Pedro and gunkhole along the coast for about a week. Some of the boats will remain in San Carlos and make day trips. There are lots of options for staying in San Carlos. Hotels run from about $30 in town to around $100 per night at the resorts along the beach The older beach hotels are about $50. Also there are many houses and condos that can be rented by the day or week. Slips are available at 2 marinas. Marina Real is less expensive but most of the activities will be at or near Marina San Carlos. Anchoring near Marina San Carlos is free and is well protected. Use of the Marina's facilities can be had for a couple of bucks a day. The Tucson Sailing Club will be hosting several events during the regatta. A Halloween dock party on Friday, a shrimp boil on Saturday night and an awards dinner Sunday.
