Yes, Jerry was there and showed construction of the plug for the hull mold. Seems to be planning to sail it in late July. The boat will be about 16.5 feet long and have a 7/8ths rig. i'm needing to replace SWEET PEA's trailer axle and hubs. the trail-rite trailer was built sept of '83 and came with hub brakes. the brakes are long gone (rusted to a hollow shell) along with the surge hitch. all are past their working lives. the frame has been cleaned and repainted. i replaced the tongue (there is a story in that) late fall '09. the axle springs, rims and tires were replace in '08 by SWEEP PEA's prior owner. i need to find a replacement axle/hub assembly. the trailer is 'rated' for a load of 2490 pounds. i just don't know all the specs ... my 'quick and dirty' measurments are: * hub bolts are ~2 5/8" on center * the 'drop' for the hubs is 4" * the axle, square, is about 68" long. anyone have the specifics? does the pacific trailer used for the new M17's use the same axle and hubs as that used on the old trail-rite? dave scobie M17 #375 - SWEET PEA visit SWEET PEA's www-site - http://www.m17-375.webs.com
I am also interested in this. My M17, 1982 model, also has a trail rite trailer. The good things about the trailer is that It is not too rusty, but there are rust spots; the axle, rims, and bearings appear to be in good shape (I took it to Lake Superior last year and it didn't complain). I replaced the bunks last year and the new ones seem solid enough for a few years. The bad parts are that the springs are quite squeaky, and that's annoying, and there are no brakes which makes me nervous on long trips. My questions: a) how do you find a good place to blast away the old paint and repaint the trailer; what price should I expect to pay for this work? I tried a powder coating company in town (Madison, WI), and the price was ridiculous, in the 3k range. b) is there a recommended type of surge brakes (mechanical or electrical) to add to this type of trailer? Hi Dave, I have the axle/hubs/springs off my (I believe the original '74 era factory trailer) old trailer. I cut up the trailer, because of the terminal rust, but kept the axle because the previous owner had replaced it only two years earlier. I don't think it has the brake backing plates. The axle is painted, not galvanized, but is in excellent shape. I understand that you are down in Seattle, but if you want to drive up to my side of the border, I could deliver the axle to you for a small fee.
