Hello All... I just finalized the purchase of 1977 M17 Chica Buena here in San Diego and have begun minor upgrades to get her dialed in and sail ready for Summer. For a 1977 she is in great shape after having been purchased from Bob Eeg by the prior owner in 2004. I understand Bob did quite a bit to her before she was purchased, so she has "good bones" and the work needing to be done is mostly cosmetic. I have been reviewing the list for several months in preparation and must say that you all are terrific with the information shared. I am trusting that perhaps I can make a bit of a contribution as well. I am a bit of a compulsive nut and plan many upgrades. I would really enjoy connecting with all of you, but am particularly interested to learn of the Southern California M17 and M15 owners and wonder if there are any rallys or gatherings that may be planned or in planning stages? There is another fabulous M17 here in San Diego's Mission Bay and I am looking forward also to finding out who owns that boat...she is really nice. Anyway...thanks for all the posts and I look forward to being a contributor! Best, Joe Balla Hull #232
Hi Joe, Congratulations, and welcome to the list! I know there are a couple of other Montys around these parts, my M17 Lily being one of them (at Driscoll's marina). If that's the one you are referring to (ivory hull, opening ports, green stripe), then thank you very much for the kind words - Bob and his gang did a great job putting her together. Send me an email off list, and I'd be happy to show Lily off, and get a look at Chica Buena. I'm out most every weekend, either on the bay with the kids or off the coast when I'm by myself. The 17-nm sail from Misson Bay down to to the Harbor Police guest docs at Shelter Island is about as adventurous as I've gotten so far. That's a fun trip, although longer than it looks to be on the chart, given how far off the coast you have to venture to avoid the kelp forests that will stop you cold. There's a SoCal Potters shindig on Mission Bay later this summer that should be a good time small-boat get together. Greetings! Happy Mother's day to all of you wonderful ladies. And if you ain't a momma, make sure you tell em!! Now on to our 2nd love... OK, mayber 3rd... I know a great number of owners are fresh water owners so this is primarily directed to the saltwater sailors of M17's. 1. Is there a recommended regime for haul outs? I'm contemplating an M17 purchase and currently own a fixed keel. But with the keel/CB is there something else to be mindful of besides just hauling and bottom painting? 2. How much of the time to you keep your boats in saltwater? - More than 80% of the year? - 40% - 80% - Pull it out everytime? And a general question, when anchoring out how much 'talk back' do you get from the C/B? I have some friends here with C/B sailboats (none of them Monty's) say they can't sleep a wink because their C/B bumps against the trunk unless they pull it in all the way. But when they do that they get more roll. BTW, does having the ballast made from steel punchings create any problems rust-wise or corrosion-wise? Fair winds, Joe s/v Sea Gray
Joe The ballast is LEAD....Not steel. No rust. Bob

Bob, Sorry about that. I saw a piece just last night that showed steel punchings laying next to a dime for size comparison. I'm delighted to see it's lead. Is it an ingot laid in place and glassed over?? Joe
Hi Joe, You are right, you did see steel punchings. Somewhere on the same site: www.MSOG.org you will find reference as to when the M15 & M17 changed over from steel to lead. My 1992 M17 was lead in the keel housing. Someone else will have to chime in to let you know when the change occurred. Then again, if you are buying new, that certainly wont be a worry as they are all, as Bob said, lead. To note, some of the boats that have had keel housing problems were fresh water craft. If you are going to buy used, and get into the steel years, you may wish to visit Sean Mulligan's site where he did a photo documentary of changing the keel housing weights. Sean's page on the keel: http://havasumontgomerys.piczo.com/?g=23004804&cr=1 Then again, you may never have a problem. Lots of the old ones are fine and have never been touched. joe: i'm not a M17 owner ... but the M15 and M17s are so similar i'll share my thoughts.
And a general question, when anchoring out how much 'talk back' do you get from the C/B?
from what i've read and what i experience in my Mboat the centerboard being down at anchor will cause 'talk back.' one will also hear 'talk back' if in a no-to-little wind situation and when motoring. i pull the center board up unless i'm sailing.
BTW, does having the ballast made from steel punchings create any problems rust-wise or corrosion-wise?
my M15 is 'of the steel.' keep an eye on any boat that is from the 'steel era.' this is not to say one should not purchase a boat that contains steel. if one makes sure no water is already in the keel and the centerboard is not covered in rust you have a good boat. if the centerboard is rusted it can be 'refinished' or a new 'lead' board can be purchased from bob eeg (the latter may be the cheaper option). the new centerboards are a bit thinner than the steel version. some have stated that purchasing a 'lead board' is a quick fix if rusting steel ballast has caused swelling in the centerboard trunk. i don't believe that anyone should replace the steel bits unless one or the other is failing. if faulty make an informed decision about the cost of repair v. finding a steel boat w/out the problem or one of the 'lead' models. dave scobie M15 #288 - Scred (yes i finally named the boat) --------------------------------- Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo! Matt, Our boats sound quite similar in appearance. Are your opening ports round as they are in mine, or did you get oval ones? Hi Tom, I've got the round ones - can't say I gave the shape much thought, just went with what Bob suggested. I enjoy their look, and they are the aspect of the boat most commented on by passers-by. I don't bother much to keep them polished, except when I can bribe my 8 year-old son to do the work. Inside the cabin, though, the knobs that hold the things closed do some damage, as my skull must be some kind of bronze magnet. If I were to do it all over, I'd probably pass on the opening ports in favor of saving a few brain cells! Matt, Aesthetics in this case trump brain cells; I would rather wear a hard hat in the cabin than give up the bronze. Just know you have the best looking 17' sailboat made since the old wooden hull days. As for maintaining bronze, I haven't touched the ports on my Nor'Sea 27 in 30 years, and the green looks great.
