Yeah ... been on the market for some time. Boat was bought cheap and the seller is trying to flip to make a buck. There were/are issues with the centerboard. The repair is sketchy and seller not sharing much detail when asked. I have been having issues lowering my keel for some time and for the past year or so it would not drop at all. so i had it removed to see what's going on. What we found is that the trunk is seriously swollen insdie. We sanded the keel down and it's stil unable to swing freely. Is there any tried and true ways for address this? Your ballast is lead not steel, however as one with a newer 17 that has leaked water in the keel and the cabin I can believe you have water in the keel. Has the boat been stored in an area with freezing temp's? that would cause the swelling to occur. Jim M-17 #603 Grace On Fri, May 12, 2023 at 10:54 AM Mike Epp <mike43067@gmail.com> wrote:

Any photos of what you are seeing? How has the boat been used, was it moored in salt water? It is hard to imagine how this would be possible, since the keel should be essentially solid fiberglass with embedded lead. Can you confirm this is a 2013 model and not an earlier steel ballast model? A 2013 should have lead ballast, not steel ballast- this issue shouldn't apply. Something is not adding up, I would recommend you take the boat to an expert that can assess the situation in person, or at least share a lot more details and photos with us to see if anyone has any ideas. You may want to talk to Bob Eeg as well, who built the boat. I had it at Tiller and Kites at Lake Pleasant AZ.The owner Bruce Andreas is very knowledgeable and has no doubt that there must be steel in the keel. There is a definite bulge on both sides. Is there any water in the keel stub? Ron, a friend of mine ( I have one or two of ‘em) has the fixed keel ‘shell’ for a M-17. Get the board down, and bond the shell to the current keel on the hull, raise the bunks the appropriate amount and you have a ‘fixed keel’ version of an M-17. This will require a tongue extension to launch/retrieve but you will have a solution that should work very well and should solve the problem. The shell sealing the area MAY prevent additional water ingress to the ballast and allow the boat to continue a useful life. I will check with the ‘pros’ to determine how and if this would work for you. I will get back with their support and thoughts on the matter. Good luck, GO On Fri, May 12, 2023 at 11:43 AM Ronald McNeil via montgomery_boats < montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com> wrote:

Is there really an M-boat owner who isn’t aware of the steel punching rusting and expanding/binding the trunk issue on these boats? That’s why I waited for a later model with lead, mild steel has no place on a boat. I always thought it was an absurd choice. Great boats with a potentially massive flaw. Stick with later versions of these boats to avoid that issue, in my opinion. www.rustyknorr.weebly.com

This will require a tongue extension to launch/retrieve but you will have a solution that should work very well and should solve the problem. The shell sealing the area MAY prevent additional water ingress to the ballast and allow the boat to continue a useful life.I will check with the ‘pros’ to determine how and if this would work for you.I will get back with their support and thoughts on the matter.Good luck, GO

Thanks Jim.I don't think I want to take that on.I'm wondering if there is a propper way to convert to a permanent fixed keel. Thanks, Ron

You need to replace the steel ballast with lead.
I did this on my M15
It was major surgery

High Tyler, it is a 2013. I'm the original owner. It's only spent a few overnights on the water and has never been in saltwater. We did not get any pics Thanks, Ron

It is hard to imagine how this would be possible, since the keel should be essentially solid fiberglass with embedded lead. Can you confirm this is a 2013 model and not an earlier steel ballast model?

I have been having issues lowering my keel for some time and for the past year or so it would not drop at all. so i had it removed to see what's going on. What we found is that the trunk is seriously swollen insdie. We sanded the keel down and it's stil unable to swing freely. Is there any tried and true ways for address this? Thanks, Ron McNeilM17/Jackpot/#675
Gary, I would be interested in what you find out about a keel option too! Jim M-17 #603 Grace On Fri, May 12, 2023 at 12:06 PM Gary H.Oberbeck <fairandsquare1@gmail.com> wrote:
Is there any water in the keel stub?
Ron, a friend of mine ( I have one or two of ‘em) has the fixed keel ‘shell’ for a M-17. Get the board down, and bond the shell to the current keel on the hull, raise the bunks the appropriate amount and you have a ‘fixed keel’ version of an M-17. This will require a tongue extension to launch/retrieve but you will have a solution that should work very well and should solve the problem. The shell sealing the area MAY prevent additional water ingress to the ballast and allow the boat to continue a useful life.
