Hello David and Bill, Great list, all good things to look at, but here is another fact. Montgomery boats are being discovered and there will be fewer on the used market. Back in the mid-90's when I decided the M17 was the craft for me, I looked for two years before I found the one that fit my level of desirable condition and price. I seem to recall I viewed 5 total, that is all I could find in the midwest.(Sailboats Inc. was a dealer of Montgomery in the 70's and 80's) Three were in very poor condition, one was showroom with alot of gear (and the price reflected it), and the 1976 model I purchased was a bit above average yet still required work. I would imagine there are more M-boats to choose from on the west coast. A client of mine had been searching for a M15 all summer and ended up driving to Michigan to purchase. Hooper's yachts tell me any M-boat they get to broker sells quickly and to people out of state. It is fun to shop, but an anxious sailor doesn't wish to get too frustrated! I got my 1983 M17 three years ago. It showed up for sale on this list while I was doing email....I committed to it over the phone within one hour. The boat was in basically perfect shape, had never seen bottom paint, well maintained, new Yamaha OB, electronics, tiller pilot, some new-ish sails and it was in Portland Oregon....I am in Southern BC. Only a days drive away. I paid a little over $6,000 IIRC. A steal as far as I am concerned.
