Welcome aboard folks. I usually single hand my M15 and am part of the Geezer crowd. My method goes like this: I use the topping lift line and run it through the bow anchor pulley. I feed the lower end of the line back to the starboard guide and jib cinch block. I still have to raise and lower the mast with my left hand while holding the line in my right hand. When the mast is vertical, I cinch the line in the block and go to ground level to secure the pins at the bow. Coming down, I reverse the procedure lowering it with the line to about 40 degrees, where I use both arms to support the mast. Be careful and good luck. Bruce King Fair Oaks, CA '84 M15
Aloha all, Just joined the list, so a short introduction... I recently discovered the existence of the Montgomery boats when looking at the Nor'Sea web site. I'm eager to see them in person, so this seems to be the place to find out where they're at. As my salutation might indicate, I live partly in Hawai'i. I'm pretty sure there are no Montgomery boats here (Hawai'i Island, a.k.a. the Big Island), but go ahead, surprise me... From mid-June I'll be on the west coast USA through the summer and early fall and traveling a fair bit so I'm hoping I might find some Montgomery owners along the way, to see the boats and possibly even get a sail. I'll for certain be in the San Francisco Bay area; also Portland, probably Seattle, possibly Olympic peninsula, and various smaller places along or near the coast (Brookings, Coos Bay; maybe Eureka or Crescent City, etc.), and along the I-5 corridor from Sacramento to Seattle. Might get to N. Idaho as a cousin recently moved to near Coeur d'Alene (big lake sailing...). There's a slim chance I might get to the New England coast (Portland, ME and thereabouts). So if anyone here is somewhere in those orbits and up for a boat-related visit, let me know! Out here in mid-Pacific, I'm a member of Na Hoa Holomoku, our local sailing club ("yacht club," ha ha...) based in Hilo - so if any of you happen to get over here please give a shout and we'll take a boat out! Our club has assorted dinghies (Sunfish, Hobie Ones, Lasers), and a few Hobie cats (a 14, a 16 and a Getaway); also a Potter 19 and an International Folkboat (and another IF that's a project on the hard, and a Wharram cat, Tiki 21 I think, that broke mooring and went on the rocks, still awaiting repairs), and a few other odds and odds. Plus one member owns a Corsair F-31 and is very generous about sharing the helm for club sailing events. john: there are M15s and M17s in the islands. the owners have posted on this listproc in the past so it is hoped they respond to you. finding a Jerry Montgomery design on the west coast isn't a challenge. i'm sure you will shortly have west coast listproc members stating their willingness to show your boat(s). there will likely be a good mix of Sage 17s, M17s, M15s and maybe an M23 at the Cruiser Challenge, on Monterey Bay, the weekend of 13 July '12. There are also Sage 17s in Idaho and Montana. Come to the Denver area i can show you an M15, M17 and Sage 17 at the same time. :: Dave Scobie :: M17 #375 SWEET PEA - www.m17-375.webs.com :: Sage Marine - www.sagemarine.com --- On Sat, 5/19/12, John Schinnerer <john@eco-living.net> wrote:

I am north of San Francisco about an hour in Sebastopol, CA. I have a lovely old Montgomery 15. I would be happy to show it to you, and sail it with you on Tomales Bay if you like. My availability is a bit spotty as I am a full time eye surgeon, but I get some time here and there! Thanks Daniel, I will get in touch as my plans firm up for where I'll be when. Would be great to sail an M-15 on Tomales! Thanks also Dave, hope I do hear from more folks. If there were any M's on this island I think they'd be known to our club ("small world, big island," as we say), and perhaps there's a recluse sailor somewhere. Can well imagine a few on other islands. Hadn't heard about the Sage, just looked at the web site. Lovely, though entirely out of my price range at present... :-p cheers, John S. john: there is a M15 that sailed to the islands from CA. there is also an M17 ... but i don't remember if she sailed there or was shipped. i meet a prior owner of this Hawaii M17 when i was on my M17 in Friday Harbor, WA, in June 2009. this was during the Montgomery Sailboat Owners Group event and this gentleman was just besides himself seeing so many M17s. :: Dave Scobie :: M17 #375 SWEET PEA - www.m17-375.webs.com :: Sage Marine - www.sagemarine.com --- On Sun, 5/20/12, John Schinnerer <john@eco-living.net> wrote:

John, If you get to Coos Bay it's only a short hop up the coast to Winchester Bay where I keep my M23 (in case you want to check out an assortment of M boats). Let me know when you're in the area and we'll see if we can coordinate something. I also have an M15 at home in Roseburg undergoing restoration at the present time. If you make it to Eugene (75 miles north of Roseburg on I-5) there is a reservoir with a fleet of Montgomeries. Fern Ridge reservoir, just west of Eugene, has a marina that had about 6 M17s and 15s (mostly 17s). A very close friend is the owner of one of those and you could probably catch a sail with him. I also have keys for his boat so between the two of us we might be able to work something out. Give a shout when you're in the area.
