Seasons Greetings to all you Monty sailors! I have a question--or shall we say a survey--for all M15 owners. My '85 M15 is sans cockpit cushions, and I have been looking into options from the standpoint of both practicality and affordability. I would very much like to hear from those of you who have cockpit cushions as to what type you have, where you sourced them from, and cost. I have already made cardboard patterns, port and starboard, and was curious to find that they are not the exact same width--the starboard side is about 1" wider at the widest part. Are all the older M15 boats built that way or is is possible that we all have some variance during the mfg process? By type of cushion, what I mean is: choice of foam: open cell vs. closed cell choice of fabric: marine vinyl vs. a sunbrella-like acrylic fiber cover single cushion each side, or split cushion ( 1/3 - 2/3 or insert) for easier access to the storage lockers. I've so far received 3 opinions. One friend who sails a Gemini out of SF strongly suggested the Bottomsiders (closed cell 1.5") and says that they are wildly popular around his docks. But that same person said that if I go with custom made cushions from a marine canvas shop, consider Sunbrella. Another point of view I received is that although Sunbrella is a quality fabric and breathes (better in the hot summer sun), it will attract dirt more easily and will be much harder to keep clean vs. having a good grade of marine vinyl in a (light color so as not to absorb heat) which can be easily wiped clean and also wiped dry with a towel if it gets wet. I like the split cushion idea because I do use the starboard locker as an ice chest / lunchbox, but that means more snaps or velcro and maybe more chance for them to shift around? What about the rest of you? Survey says...... Thanks and Fair Winds Neil
I purposely made one cockpit seat wider than the other because my wife had a wider stern than me so I made the port side a bit wider to appease her. She preferred the port side. jerry ----- Original Message ----- From: <ndorf@surfbest.net> To: <montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Wednesday, December 02, 2009 9:50 AM Subject: M_Boats: Cockpit cushion choices

A "broad reach", so to speak? OK all kidding aside, actually on my boat it's the port side that's 15" wide and the starboard side that's 15" wide. So who had the bigger stern you say? Come clean, now. :-)
I rather like using four small cushions, two Type 4 throwable ones and two small C-Cushion seat-sized ones. I can arrange them for maximum comfort and even sometimes stack them all on the cockpit sole at the front of the footwell where they are high enough that I can sit with my feet in the cabin, leaning against the sides of the companionway. It is a good place to read because you can pull the companionway slide aft for a sunshade over the book. With the fwd hatch open, there is a nice breeze, and it is easy to keep a watch out. Theree are several really nice options for cushions for m-15. I priced one of them at over $400. Too much for me. I went to an outlet place and bought a closed cell foam swim raft about 5 feet by 2+ feet, which turned out to be exactly the length of the cockpit and when cut in two each side perfectly fits the m-15 cockpit seat - most any pool store would also have them ( mine is even green to almost match my boat) . I cut it in half lengthwise with an electric knife. Had to do a little rounding at the front outside corners as well. The cut side faces the outside, so the front edge you can see is finished. There is a built in pillow on one end of the float, or two raised areas after cutting in half, and those areas are in the stern, where I don't sit anyway. The seats are very comfortable, fit the cockpit perfectly, and I think cost me $24. Even at a posh pool place, a float would probably be $50 or $60, and I suppose winter is a good time to look for closeout bargains on swim stuff. After a season of use, I am very happy with choice and money saved. ________________________________ From: "ndorf@surfbest.net" <ndorf@surfbest.net> To: montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com Sent: Wed, December 2, 2009 12:50:21 PM Subject: M_Boats: Cockpit cushion choices Seasons Greetings to all you Monty sailors! What year was your M15 built? Mine's a Jerry boat. If your's is a Bob boat, I wonder if the lengths are different. The full length of each of my cockpit seats are 68", so 5 feet comes up a little short. One side is 15" at the widest point and the other is 16", so I would need two rafts--but still not that expensive for an interim solution I suppose. How thick is the foam?
My m-15 is a 2007. I will post a picture on the trailor sailor site - you can see that it really fits pretty well for the cost and time. Can't measure my boat, it is in hibernation until spring comes again, I just know cushions were within 1/4 inch of the length of my cockpit which was close enough for me. Foam is probably 2 inches thick - just go to a pool supply place and you can see the type of foam mattresses I am talking about, measure their length and width and sit on one. In season they are probably at Walmart and Target as well, but around me those stores are selling sleds and snowsuits now. There are a few brands and colors - often blue or pink, mine is green - and prices vary from store to store. ________________________________ From: Neil Dorf <ndorf@surfbest.net> To: For and about Montgomery Sailboats <montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Wed, December 2, 2009 10:15:00 PM Subject: Re: M_Boats: Cockpit cushion choices What year was your M15 built? That's what I used in my M15 Vanilla. The color didn't look great--darkish green, and the really got hot in the sun, so go for a light color. ⎈--Gary ☺ On Dec 2, 2009, at 5:37 PM, mrh219@yahoo.com wrote:

Neil, Here's my cheap solution: I bought some of those coated, closed cell foam garden kneeling pads in a size big enough for my gluty-arse and tied a short piece of line between the handle openings of two of them. What I end up with is a flat cushion about three feet long. Two sets laid end to end makes a bench. One set, bent in the middle makes a kind of chair and offers back support against the coaming or bent double makes a nice thick cushion. Losing one overboard is no big deal, but in use I find they don't seem to jump out of the boat. Good MOB practice if they did. George M15 #385 On Dec 2, 2009, at 9:50 AM, ndorf@surfbest.net wrote:
