M17 "Sloop John B". Just had to add my 2 cents worth about hatch boards, 3/8 is far to thin a material for long lasting hatch boards and tapering the edge works for a while until the end grain which is now double in size as a square edge is more apt to suck in moisture. With a little warping they will jamb. I increased the guide size to 7/8" and use 3/4" mahogany ply, 3 boards with 20 degree bevel where they meet each other so as to direct water out. All edges were sealed with west epoxy then spar varnished. They have been in use for 4 years and I just stripped them and put 8 coats of vitralite spar varnish on for another few years. Solid teak would be nice but hard to get and very pricey. Tony; I just made( ok- with a little help) a new set from 3/8 teak plywood. The archives suggested to me to make them three piece, and to epoxy the edges. I'd decided to use Cetol, so overlapped the epoxy about 1/4" onto the flat. That might not look too great if you were going natural or oil finish. I sure don't see mine delaminating any time soon, at least from the edges soaking up water. I found a woodworker's specialty lumberyard here in Michigan that sold it in 4'x4' , one side teak, sections for less than $70.00, so had enough for a spare set and a fourth screened center section, and envision a dedicated compass mount small bottom board too. Idle minds and rainy days go together well! My old bracket compass needs replacing, and I don't like it there in the middle of the port bulkhead anyway, so I'm looking for ideas if anyone wants to offer suggestions. Still deciding if a real sailboat compass is what I need. Plastimo has Mini-Contest, and Mini-C, and Ritchie has a similarly priced model (maybe SR-2 Venture-if my memory is engaged) that look useful. Hey, and maybe that little table idea somebody posted. I've been rolling the idea around for a table base/small item/beverage holder to fit over the compass mount board too, another archive posting idea. The wood boards are too beautiful to withhold from public view on the water, but I have a bunch of 1/4" polycarbonate sitting around that could replace the primary boards for storage in sun and rain. I made a greenhouse from the stuff, and it has withstood daily sunlight at 7400 feet for some ten years. So far the 1/2" boards I am using have survived with 6 coats of varnish, but I will darn sure keep an eye on the ends, and maybe try an epoxy coating. I agree, the plywood isn't holding up very well. I'm thinking of replacing
my mine with tinted plexiglass. To keep the weight (and cost) down I'm thinking about using 1/4" and frame it with an additional 1/4" strip to fit
the slides. What I'd reallly like to do is make a pair of doors but haven't woked out the design to be weatherproof. I had plexiglass doors on
my previous NorSea for 5 years and never had any problems.

Tod, Did you use anything besides varnish to treat the edges of the plywood? When I look at my edges they have a lot of gaps. My boards haven't started any delamination, but if I don't do something soon, I'm sure I won't last the summer. Any issues with warping?? Has anyone tried some of the newer teak sealers out? Such as Starbrite's Tropical Teak Sealer???? I have teak ply for my hatchboards. Coated with oodles of coats of varnish. Beautiful, no delamination problem (they probably have between 6 and 10 coats on them), satisfying. Easy as pie to maintain since they aren't bolted or screwed down to the boat.
I kept my old painted hatchboards for when I have the good ones in the house for their annual winter coat of varnish.
I tried 3 boards but find I like 2 better because they are large enough to make good counters when eating. Also, it is easier to hold two in one hand than three because the middle one always seems to slip around.
Now the companionway strips, on the other hand, I'm glad I swapped out for aluminum.
Just my experience...

Hi guys,
We just got back Saturday afternoon from our trip to the San Juan Islands with the Montgomery group (huge thanks to Larry for herding the cats and setting this all up). We had an awesome time and met so many nice Montgomery owners and their boats. This was our first time seeing the M23
(impressive and huge) and the M15 (equally impressive to see two people comfortably sleeping on this pocket cruiser). We also went from zero overnight trips on our M17 to eight nights, and it was not nearly as bad as I thought it was going to be (I am 6'7"). We kept up pretty well with the rest of the group also, even though we were one of the few M17 boats with 2 people onboard. I think we also win smallest outboard award (2.5hp
Yamaha) but it pushes the boat at 4.5 to 5 kts in calm water. We tried to
sail as much as possible anyway. At one point we were actually keeping pace with the M23 Faith and staying ahead of M17 Corndog. I had to rag Larry about this over the FRS but then he pulled out the rest of his 150 and sailed past us :-(
We have uploaded a bunch of unedited pictures to http://www.eidolonyacht.com/sanjuanislands2009 for you to enjoy. These are just a raw upload of all the pictures with many similar shots. If you
click on a thumbnail you will get the full image. Note that it is really hard to get a stable non-blur shot when close hauled. :-) Hopefully others will upload some shots of our boat as sadly we have never had a picture taken of her while we were under sail.
We hope the rest of the Montgomery group continuing the trip into Canada has a great time and fair weather. Thanks again for letting us cruise with you.

Joe, I responded to Tony's message before reading yours, but I have since been thinking along similar lines. The wood boards are too beautiful to withhold
from public view on the water, but I have a bunch of 1/4" polycarbonate sitting around that could replace the primary boards for storage in sun and rain. I made a greenhouse from the stuff, and it has withstood daily sunlight at 7400 feet for some ten years. So far the 1/2" boards I am using
have survived with 6 coats of varnish, but I will darn sure keep an eye on the ends, and maybe try an epoxy coating.

I have teak plywood hatch board that are absorbing water down the sides and coming apart. I have to replace them but I am not sure what to use. Replacing them with the same material is not a good option since mine are less than a year old. I was just wondering what others are using. If I might butt in again, all of my wood but the slides is coated with Tropical Teak Sealer, after much work removing the original stuff. I like the look, but I used it primarily because it has protected the teak on my Nor'Sea in tropical sun much better than anything I have tried this last 30 years. I wish I had used it on my hatch boards, since I received them unfinished. Oh, the seduction of varnish!

Rick, Thanks for the pics. I guess we were always too far behind to get in the frame. Della has not downloaded her photos yet, but she was always hanging over the edge taking pictures when she should have been crewing, so I will bet she got some good shots of Eidolon which will appear in due time. Pictures!
Hi guys,
We just got back Saturday afternoon from our trip to the San Juan Islands with the Montgomery group (huge thanks to Larry for herding the cats and setting this all up).
Rick and Debora M17 #635 Eidolon
