mat has a binder that holds it togeth so you can handle it before wetting it out. This binder is dissolved by any of the polyesters but is not affected by epoxy. Try in to mold it with epoxy is like trying to mold a piece of carpet. It never breaks down and conforms to detail. Normally with a polyester repair you use mat under the cloth because it sticks a lot better and is less likely to delaminate (and it builds bulk much faster), but epoxy sticks so much better that that no lon ger is a factor. Epoxy sticks WAY better for repairs on old fiberglass; so much better it's almost stupid to use anything else, even if it's just a cosmetic repair. Get wifey to get you a copy of The Gougeon Brothers on Boat Construction . They're smarter than most of us, and I try to read mine about once a year to remember all the things I've forgotten.
