Thanks, everyone, for the candid comments. Apparently the quarter berth in an M-17 is only suitable for smaller kids or storage. I may have to look for a larger boat to really sleep 3 comfortably in the cabin. (Rhodes 22, perhaps, for later. Same keel design as the Montgomery.) If I have to rely on the cockpit and a boom tent, I may just keep the SeaPearl for awhile. I made a platform for the cockpit, and have slept three boys there,(two grandsons and a friend) with me in the pop-up tent in the forward compartment, but they were very crowded. However, there is enough room for my two grandsons in the cockpit, who are my regular crew. I really don't have a suitable tent enclosure for the boys, though; they get wet with dew or eaten by mosquitoes on the local lakes. Perhaps a better investment for me for now would be to tackle making or finding an awning company to build a good tent enclosure for my SeaPearl cockpit. That would save me from buying a larger vehicle now, to tow a bigger boat. The SeaPearl (only 600 lbs. before water ballast of 250 lbs.) is a great boat for lakes and protected waters; It is essentially an open boat, though, so I'll just have to postpone my ambitions to cruise the Bahama's until I can get something capable of blue water trips. Thanks, Jerry
Speaking of blue water sailing. Have any of you sailed, say, to the Bahamas? Crossed the Gulf Stream? Be interested to hear from any of you that have done so. I single-handed a 1977 M17 from W. Palm Beach to St. Thomas USVI in 1982. Mostly uneventful. The M17 is a good little sea boat. I'm sure that a beautiful sail like that was anything but "uneventful". What I meant by uneventful was how easy it was to just get up and go. Those days, I was young and stupid, fearless and adventurous at the same time. I had a somewhat out-of-date Cruising Guide to the Bahamas, Crusing Guide to the Greater Antilles, Reed's Nautical Almanac, and --the most useful publication-- The Gentlemen's Guide to Passage South (subtitle: The Thornless Path to Windward) by Bruce Van Sant. My brother-in-law towed the boat to W. Palm with his Ford Ranger and we launched at some local ramp. He said "good-bye and good luck ya'", and I was gone. I was pretty good at celestial navigation only because I couldn't afford loran, and GPS was still with the military. So, it was a cheap Davis sextant and a Casio stopwatch. Oh, and an excellant Ritchie compass. I shaped a course across the Gulf Stream towards Gun Cay. As I recall, it was my birthday, which was just coincidence. I planned the sail for February ahead of the storm season and hoped to catch a cold front to push me and the boat south. Okay, everyone's got a plan that won't work. I beat to weather the whole trip--took about 45 days. It was easy to catch rain water and not so easy to catch fish. I met a number of strange and not-so-strange people on the way down, including David Crosby.
