I just lauched my 2006 Montgomery 15 this week for the first time in Barnegat Bay NJ, and there is water in the sole of the cockpit almost all the time. Any one had this happen to them? Am I doing something wrong. Had 3 pjeople in the boat including myself. ?? Sandy
Sandy, this is too be expected depending on your load. With three people on board (depending on the total weight) it is not unusual to have some water come in the scupper (drains). This is true of both the 15 and 17. There has been lots of discussions about folks that plug the scupper to eliminate the water in the cockpit if they are going to have lots of folks on board. Sandra, I defer to Dave Scobie on the subject, since he owned a 15, but I suspect that the 15--like the 17--can get water from two sources. My 17 ships some water through the scuppers when I am under power from motor or sail (especially when heavily laden), and it drains out when the boat is stationary. I also get some "burping" through the hole for the centerboard line, especially when the board is up. As has been discussed recently, the first problem can probably be solved with kayak plugs (I used rubber balls to plug the scuppers in a pinch, and have ordered some plugs), or plastic valves if the hoses are accessible as they are on the newer 17s. The centerboard hole pumps much less volume, and I am not sure I have solved this problem yet. A fellow 17 owner (who can chime in) has had luck threading part of a stepped cap from a silicone tube over the line, which closes the gap as well as anything can over a piece of soft rope, but I have not tried my installation yet. If it works, maybe West Marine can provide the part for $50, but I paid $3 and have the tube of silicone to boot. Incidentally, West Marine sells some nice lever-action scupper plugs that expand to 1.25". Unfortunately, my scuppers are 1.375", so they don't fit snugly enough. If your scuppers are smaller, this is the best option of all. I first tried a sink stopper (with hole large enough for the line) to cover over the centerboard hole. But the better solution for me was to use a wire guard found at the local Ace Hdw store. The wire guard that I refer to is the 2-3" long hard rubber guard that you would use to keep the electrical wire from your drill, skill saw or iron from getting in the way. I got one the allows me to slide it up and down the line. The shoulder of the wire guard keeps most of the water out. But nothing's perfect, so keep your Johnson&Murphy's in the closet. I am the one Tom referred to on the San Juan trip with the cone from a tube of sealer. The cone is one of those that you can cut at various places to make a larger or smaller hole for applying your sealer. You cut this at a point where the line just barley passes through. When you put the centerboard down you make sure the cone seats into the hole and that does it. The top of the cone is the part that screws to the tube is a larger diameter than the centerboard rope hole. The one day we had rain on our trip and were powering all the way to our next destination I decided to pull the board up just so I would have less drag, but under power and with the board up I got the burping so I just put the board back down. Didn't think of it then but I may have been able to just put the board down a little bit to stop the burping, I will try that in the future. As far as the scuppers go, the flapper valves leaked when I had two or more people in the boat so I upgraded to the ball valves and I keep them closed unless I think I will need them open for draining. They are kind of expensive and pretty tight to install but one in there they work great. Hi Sandra and M-gang, When I had the burping and water spitting CB pennant hole in our M15, my solution was to build a teak block that fit the CB pennant hole. I put a wider "lid" on the top, shaped to fit the slope of the sides of the water channel, to keep it from dropping down the hole, and epoxy glued the two pieces together. Then I drilled a hole for the CB pennant; threaded the pennant through the hole; and put the teak plug in place. Under normal sailing conditions it stopped the burping and spitting, and our feet stayed dry. When docked, I'd raise the teak plug so that rain water could easily drain. The solution worked very well, but I think you could just stuff a small sponge in the hole and it would do the same. Connie
Connie, At least on the 17, the little squirt with each plunge of the boat is pushed by air under pressure, and it pushes the sponge out. More elegant solutions like yours are probably the best.
