Re: M_Boats: Water through centerboard hole
Oooh, looking at the pics, mine has been "altered". The corner of the trunk is roughly cut out and the line exits there. It doesn't have the clean, neat plastic sleeve. It's just a biggish hole. Also my winch is to the right of the cleat, so the line has to go over the cleat and then down through the hole. The water doesn't drain anywhere, just sits on the sole and tries to rot the wood at the base of the v berth. So I towel it out. From that description I bet you get a good amount of water. I have an idea brewing for a fix to mediate the issue. Can you share a picture?

Hi Tom, Here's the link to their website. https://sugru.com/ https://sugru.com/blog/16-ways-to-use-sugru-on-your-boat They have videos and fun ideas shared. You can use for marine applications and about anything else you can imagine! You can also blend colors. I used white with a wee pinch of yellow to get the color blend of my boat. For my hard plastic framed solar panel I did not want to screw it down so molded sugru on the sides of the frame to tie down on hatch. Works great in the cabin for misc ideas. Becky Sent from my iPad

Looks like one of your boat's prior owners had a Sawz-All and was not afraid to use it. The winch should be on the vertical part of the cockpit sole just above the centerboard case and offset slightly to port. Two of the mounting holes are still visible. The other two would have been on the part of the cockpit sole that has been cut away. If I was you, I would move the winch back as close to its original position as possible and put some kind of fairlead over the hole in the centerboard case so the pendant doesn't chafe. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jazzy" <jazzydaze@gmail.com> To: "For and about Montgomery Sailboats" <montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Wednesday, June 15, 2016 11:30:35 PM Subject: Re: M_Boats: Water through centerboard hole Here ya go! Like Jazz, we have a big cutout for the pendant--even larger than his. I like the cutout as it allows frequent inspection of connection to CB. We wedge a piece of sponge in there for sailing--works great. To avoid splash while raising CB, I just haul it up very slowly. Hi all, Do you guys get water splashing inside from the centerboard hole? I get it sailing and when raising it. What are your solutions?
Also, got some help (on account of my pissed off back) and El Nino is looking smart and capable in his new home!

Interesting to see these variations on the centerboard tackle. I had a bunch of trouble with the pendant jamming on the winch. For a quick fix I put an eye strap on the bulkhead just under the winch and led the pendant through it. This is hard on the line, which has to make a bunch of sharp turns, but I’ve had no jams. It might be better to space the winch further out from the bulkhead. There is a little too much space between my centerboard and the stop pin, and if the centerboard comes down too fast (like when unjamming the winch) it can push past the stop. When that happens it’s hard to get back into place.
I had the jam thing once too, I extended the pendant line to reach the genny winch and just pulled it loose slowly. Wasn't too bad once I thought of how to fix it! Jazz On Jun 16, 2016 9:08 AM, "David Rifkind" <drifkind@acm.org> wrote:

My pendant jams too if I take 3 wraps on the winch. The solution for me has been to take only 2 wraps on the winch. Two wraps are (just) enough grip to raise the centerboard and never jam. ----- Original Message ----- From: "David Rifkind" <drifkind@acm.org> To: "For and about Montgomery Sailboats" <montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Thursday, June 16, 2016 12:06:30 PM Subject: Re: M_Boats: Water through centerboard hole Interesting to see these variations on the centerboard tackle. I found a teak winch pad for a 4” winch, 1-1/2” thick, about $15— https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00GOML8EA It’s perfect. No more jams.
