I'm considering spending the big bucks that Ida Sailor wants for the Monty 17 rudder. Before I do I wanted to ask the group if they thought the product to be a good one. I just purchased M17 #600. She has a wood kick up rudder now and a back up solid one piece rudder (quite an impressive piece of wood!!!). Looking forward to reading your opinions! Mike Johnson M17 #600 'Ohana
Hi Mike and all: I have one of the Ida Sailor kick up rudders and like it very much. It is a well made rudder and I have only minor criticism, that being that the factory varnish job leaves a lot to be desired. The blade hold down takes a little getting used to, but that mastered, I've received good service from my rudder. It is very long and a bit of a hand full when it is not hanging from the transom. Add about six coats of good varnish and you'll have a very good looking, long lasting rudder. I have an Ida Sailor Rudder, works great. Also have the optional Mast Crutch attachment, so I don't have to take the rudder off, on occasion I have forgotten to take the mast crutch off, but still sailed fine, just looked a little strange. Up sailing on Lake Superior last week, took the boat over on the ferry and while preparing to launch from the Madeline Island marina and some guy who works there comes running over to compliment on the M17 and how good of shape it was in...(its only two years old), he then told me that he used to rig them when they were being sold through Sailboats Inc. out of Superior Wis. back in the late seventies and always thought they were awesome boats and very well constructed. I agreed with him and said that this was actually my second M17. Had a great time sailing out around the island. I found the IdaSailor to be very good. And it's a real back and time saver since you leave it on for trailering. ~~~_/)~~~ Gary Sent from my iPhone :-) On Jul 10, 2011, at 3:51 PM, Mike Johnson <mrexj71860@gmail.com> wrote:

Mike, I like my IdaSailor; good piece of hardware, and the mast crutch accessory is a nice addition. Tom Jenkins M17 Hull 626 On Jul 10, 2011, at 3:51 PM, Mike Johnson wrote:

Good product. Had a very minor issue with the blade being shorter than I wanted and Ida Sailor sent me a new blade at no cost. Best customer service I've ever had for any product - in my life. Buy it. Jim M-17 "Spirit" On Jul 10, 2011, at 3:51 PM, Mike Johnson wrote:

I've owned two IS rudders. Mounted one on an early model M17 which I sold with the boat, and bought and use one on my current M17. I don't like the line/cleat system for holding the blade down, but that's my problem; I use the plastic bolt (it's something fancier that plastic, but I can't recall the name...), and I've proven to myself it shears as advertised. I'll use it rather than the other hold-down method. I never trail the boat with rudder attached--I think it unnecessarily stresses the transom. t On Mon, Jul 11, 2011 at 6:29 PM, James Poulakis <picfo@comcast.net> wrote:

I replaced the wood rudder on my '83 M-17 with an IdaSailor rudder this spring, mainly because the old rudder's foil was not symmetrical, causing the boat to perform differently on opposite tacks. (Or maybe poorly on both tacks!) The new rudder has a nicely shaped, symmetrical foil and is performing well, though I'm having to practice lowering and raising the blade with the line provided to do so. (There are instructions for doing this on the company's website.) Materials and connections seem very solid, and Joel's customer service is exemplary. I accidentally threw out with the shipping box a few needed smaller parts for attaching my rudder and tiller, and after I called Joel he quick-shipped the parts right to me, no questions asked. He also was available to answer any questions I had. The guy seems completely dedicated to making his customers happy. I also ordered the mast crutch with my new rudder, but since I haven't used it yet I can't comment (though it looks very solid and should raise the mast (at full extension) high enough for me to lift or lower the mast the rest of the way. Also, the new rudder is easier to install at launching (though, with the mast crutch attached to the rudder you may not have to take this step), as attaching my old rudder with the long, sticking stainless-steel rod was somewhat difficult and time consuming. There is a rudder maker in Texas that I got a rudder from and it was $400.00. It is great and would not hesitate to buy again. I will get the name of the manufacturer and will post it. --- On Tue, 7/12/11, Gordon Gilbert <gordon@financialwriting.net> wrote: From: Gordon Gilbert <gordon@financialwriting.net> Subject: Re: M_Boats: Ida Sailor Rudder To: "For and about Montgomery Sailboats" <montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com> Date: Tuesday, July 12, 2011, 8:18 AM I replaced the wood rudder on my '83 M-17 with an IdaSailor rudder this spring, mainly because the old rudder's foil was not symmetrical, causing the boat to perform differently on opposite tacks. Sounds like J.O.Woodworks John Owens 903 752 0302. I got drop boards for my M-17 from him that were perfect and priced right.
