I was scrubbing and otherwise cleaning the boat recently and placed a slightly rusty can of acetone on the cockpit seat. It was only there for a few minutes, but there is now a faint but noticeable rusty rectangle in spite of all my efforts with normal cleaners to get it off. Hi Rick, I've used toilet bowl cleaner for such stains with success. I favor the cleaners with bleach, but you have to be careful about splashing those on your clothes. Use either "The Works" or Soft Scrub. I used everthing I could put my hands on when I first got my M-17. Finally my wife asked me if I tried Soft Scrub. Worked great. "The Works" is great also. It removes stains that none of the expensive marine products would do. And you can find it at the Dollar store!!! Rick, The product I use for set in rust stains is CLR.? You can find it at Home Depot. It comes in a grey quart container. When I purchased my 1982 boat, it had some deep rust stains in the cockpit from the mast crutch (steel)? that the previous owner laid there all winter.? To make a long story short, it took me a month to remove the stains.??I poured some CLR on the stain and scrubed with a stiff brush and then let it set over night.? In the morning, I repeated the process.? With each scrubbing a little more of the stain was removed.? Since your stain is new and not nearly as deep, I'm sure you will be able to remove your stain very quickly.? Also, the?product w/ oxalic acid (The Works) in it is great for removing the?'tea' stain on the hull after a season of sailing. Just use a garden sprayer to apply and a garden hose to rinse and your hull is back to new!!
