Hi, my name is Carol and I grew up sailing a Montgomery 17 along the Gulf Coast of Tx with my dad. After he passed, the boat sat for nearly 15 years, but I'm proud to report that she has been resurected! Although I had not sailed in over 20 years, my husband and I have made it our mission to make her seaworthy and learn to sail her. We are in Michigan and we primarily stick to inland lakes, but look forward to gaining enough experience and confidence to tackle the Great Lakes! And what an amazing boat! We are overwhelmed by the compliments we get on her.
Welcome. I sail a Monty 15 (Wrinkles) in inland lakes and Tawas Bay in MI. Live in Oscoda. Perhaps we'll be on the same waters one day! Jeff Johnston On Wed, Jul 24, 2013 at 11:34 AM, Carol Barber <carollynbarber@gmail.com>wrote:

Welcome Carol. Glad to hear that you are sailing your family boat again and making new memories with her. We are in Ontario and bought our M17 specially for Great Lakes sailing. Bill Wickett Makin' Time M17 #622 On 2013-07-24, at 12:34 PM, Carol Barber <carollynbarber@gmail.com> wrote:

Carol, What is the number on your M-17 sail? We Montgomery sailors recognize one another by the sail number. That number also indicates the sequence of your hull. Carol, Welcome to the MSOG. It is quite a site for info about restoration and enjoying your boat. I am still on the Gulf Coast with my second M-17. It will take lots of work to make her look and perform the way I want but it will be worth it. They are amazing boats. Good luck with your boat. Fair Winds, Tom B. Hi Doug, I am about directly across the Gulf from you in Rockport, Tx. Just a littttttle bit closer and we could go sailing on the weekends. Hey Doug, What sort of "serious mods" are you considering? My main has a bolt rope and I am going to change to slugs and install a mast gate. The winds here off Corpus Christi vary from nothing (10% of the time) to about 20 knots (60% of the time) so I want to be able to drop the main to a reef point easily. Tom B. Hi Tom, I installed a mast gate this spring, and it really helps in handling the main. You don't have to mess with removing the sail stop, dropping a slug and replacing the stop (if you haven't dropped it OB) when you're reefing, etc. Should have done it years ago. Hi Rick, Is it true what they say about being able to bend out the stock opening in the mast for the bolt rope by simply tapping it back straight with a block and a hammer without cracking it? That seems like quite a trick. Regards, Tom B On Sat, Jul 27, 2013 at 2:49 PM, Rick Davies <jdavies104@gmail.com> wrote:

No Tom, I've never heard of bending the stock opening and I'm not sure why you would want to do that. The mast gate doesn't need any change to the opening, and mounts on a shock cord inserted in two holes drilled in the mast. You can see it on mastgates.com. It's an easy installation. for Jerry's boats a MastGate install will require some 'hacksaw work' as the opening is a outward bend of the mast's luff slot. for Bob's boats the mast is different and a MastGate install requires some measuring and the drilling of a couple of holes. :: Dave Scobie :: M17 #375 SWEET PEA - www.m17-375.webs.com ________________________________ On Sun, Jul 28, 2013 at 6:32 AM, Rick Davies <jdavies104@gmail.com> wrote:

David, My boat is one of Jerry's. What has to be hacksawed out?? If I was to cut off all the outward bent metal on the luff track it would result in a rather large hole in the mast. Would that be covered (incorporated) into the mast gate? I saw the installation tape on the mast gate site and what had to be cut was not really clear as concerns the older M-boat mast configuration where the gooseneck lives. Have you tried installing one of these things? Tom B M-17, hull#258 On Sun, Jul 28, 2013 at 4:37 PM, W David Scobie <wdscobie@yahoo.com> wrote:

There is another Monty in Corpus Christi but the fellow has it in storage. Boooooo! Actually used to sail with a Monty 23 in Galveston. It was fun trying to stay in front of him. Oh well, his boat looked fine from the back end too. Good luck with your program. Fair winds, Tom

Tom, Couldn't be better. Easy up, easy down, no-hassle operation. If it touches bottom, it goes back down by itself as soon as it's clear. Rick M17 #633 Lynne L On Sunday, July 28, 2013, Thomas Buzzi wrote:

No Tom,
I've never heard of bending the stock opening and I'm not sure why you would want to do that. The mast gate doesn't need any change to the opening, and mounts on a shock cord inserted in two holes drilled in the mast. You can see it on mastgates.com. It's an easy installation.
Good luck,

Hi Rick, Is it true what they say about being able to bend out the stock opening in the mast for the bolt rope by simply tapping it back straight with a block and a hammer without cracking it? That seems like quite a trick.

Hi Tom,
I installed a mast gate this spring, and it really helps in handling the main. You don't have to mess with removing the sail stop, dropping a slug and replacing the stop (if you haven't dropped it OB) when you're reefing, etc. Should have done it years ago.

Doug, Sounds like it is definitely worth the money. Bought a chart yesterday of the immediate cruising area I will be using. $37. Ouch. Anyway, looks like most of the area is 9 to 11 feet deep so maybe won't need to worry too much about hitting things. Tom On Mon, Jul 29, 2013 at 5:59 AM, Rick Davies <jdavies104@gmail.com> wrote:

Carol, Welcome to the MSOG. It is quite a site for info about restoration and enjoying your boat. I am still on the Gulf Coast with my second M-17. It will take lots of work to make her look and perform the way I want but it will be worth it. They are amazing boats. Good luck with your boat.
