Thanks to the thread on Tiller Trimmers I am purchasing a Tiller Taimer from West Marine. It is $29 but does not include the black plastic horn cleats. I will install with cam cleats and fair leads at extra cost probably from Duckworks. Thanks to a past thread on reefing systems, I have ordered parts from Duckworks. I have been landlocked this spring sailing season while my wife goes through knee replacement surgery. I am hoping to get wet in a couple of weeks. While I have been sailing my old M-17 for several years now, I am always grateful for the ideas and dialogue from you all. I recently bought and installed a Tiller Trimmer (http://www.tillertrimmer.com), which works great. Paid $59 for mine, but I see they've dropped the price to $49, free shipping. They delivered quickly, and I think it's a great device. Once you've got it trimmed right, you can leave the helm for several minutes.

We just got back last night from a weekend trip to Gray's harbor (on the Washington coast). Both days (saturday and sunday) were great sailing days, with the wind an almost constant NW @ ~15 knots and morning clouds burning off by around noon. On saturday we put our M17 in at Westport marina and sailed out over the bar into the Pacific ocean proper. We had double checked the conditions since sailing out into the ocean from here can be quite dangerous at times (the coast guard will even close the bar at times and issue fines to boats attempting to cross the bar under bad conditions). But we only had swells of about 5 to 7 feet, with the 15 knot wind. It was quite fun and we made very swift progress with the constant dependable wind. A big change from the light and variable winds that always seem to plague the sound.
On Sunday we sailed over to Hoquiam from Westport, really cruising at an average of 5.5 knots the whole way! Gray's harbor is an excellent place to practice your navigation skills. We had just completed the US Sailing coastal nav course at Windworks sailing and it was nice to be able to recognize all of the navigation aids, correctly read the charts, and not get stuck in the mud! :-)

Rick,
I have the same style tiller tamer on my M-15.? For the most part it works well, however, for?all you other M-15 owners, be aware that this type of tiller tamer has a tendency to catch the traveler during tacking in light air.??

The ad at the link notes that the device could be located on top or underneath the tiller, so perhaps the latter configuration would solve the problem of tangling with the 15's traveler.
In any event, I've had many many occasions to stretch a long-legged 6'3" frame, one foot resting on the end of the tiller to at least avert an uncontrolled turn, if not maintain a heading, while I reached forward to clear a twisted bolt-rope feed on the mainsail, or tie off a forward reefing line.
You guys pushed me over the edge at a weak moment, and I've placed my order.

M15 SCRED had a tiller tamer that was ~1/4 broken when purchased. i fiddled at making it 'work' to some extent. SCRED's was located on the 'bottom' of the tiller. the weakness of this location, IMO, is if you 'lift' the tiller to raise the rudder you put stress on the 'tamer' causing it to break. i did this to terminal affect causing 'bits' of tiller tamer to fly around the cockpit.
in time i'm going to move to the a 'tamer' that uses a cleat with a line. i have seen this work with good results on gary hyde's M17.

I would not be without my tiller tamer. Made my own, two lengths of shock cord (bungee), each doubled around cleats at stern, fastened to length of line between them, line passes thru small cleat on underside of tiller, forward horn is tapered to "jam" line passing thru. Some experimenting to get proper length and strength of bungee, proper diameter and length of line between them. If desired, will take photos next visit to Rejoyce!, ask off line.
