Re: M_Boats: M-17 centerboard renovation advice
Dear Mark, thanks for the great advice. I did not know about the retaining pin at lower rear of keel trunk but should have suspected it since something had to stop centerboard from bottoming out. Can the stop pin be driven out from either direction? I hope you don't mind if on occasion I bother you with more questions. Thanks again for now. Bill K.
There are some pretty good illustrations of the centerboard configuration on the MSOG web site; One set is at http://msog.org/models/m17/m-17-cb.cfm. There is also a narrative of a centerboard renovation at http://msog.org/how-to/cb-fritz.cfm. For a ton of information, check the list archive, at http://msog.org/cfmods/list_archive_search.cfm. There is a pre-built search for "Centerboard Repair" below the search form. Just click on it and you'll get 72 messages with information. There are also messages about pivot and stop pin dimensions, correct pendant length, and other groovy stuff. Don't know if they're included in the search mentioned above, but they are in the archive. Believe me, everything is in the archive. If anyone has problems using the archive search engine at http://msog.org/cfmods/list_archive_search.cfm, let me know. I'll be glad to help. I think all the owners would like to have some more pictures and your own narrative for the MSOG web site when you renovate. The CB seems to be a mystical thing since most people don't see it often and attachment points are hidden; any info you could share on your renovation experience would be most welcome. The invitation is extended to anyone getting ready to renovate the CB. Seems there's never enough information available on it. Bill, I'm glad to be able to help. Questions are no bother. The helpfulness on this mail list just goes round and round until everyone benefits sooner or later. I know I have been the recipient many times. The stop pin can be driven out from either direction. It is just a plain piece of 3/8" ss rod (unless some previous owner of your boat changed it for some reason). Your stop pin could very well be bent (from the board being dropped rather than eased into position). The one on GRACE was. I picked up a piece of scrap 3/8" ss rod from a metal shop to replace it.
