Newbie lurking and M17 question
Hi all, I have just joined the list and I'm starting research on pocket cruisers. My sailing experience consists of a lot of windsurfing and a little catamaran sailing - mostly a long time ago. My question - how many can comfortably daysail in a '17? Weekend? We are used to being in close quarters camping. Andrew Lucero
Hi Andrew, I have had three people on my M-17 several times and there is plenty of room. I think four would be comfortable as well. As far as overnight, my wife does not sail so all my experience has been alone and there is plenty of room. I sailed the San Juan / Gulf Islands in 2009 and there were several M-17's with husband and wife teams overnighting and at least one with a dog as well. They seemed to work it out just fine and one couple had a custom boom tent that covered the cockpit so they could move a bunch of stuff out there to make more room for sleeping in the cabin. I had a Potter 19 before the Montgomery that had a lot of room inside as well for it's size, although the cockpit was much smaller than the Monty. Hope this helps, let us know what you end up with. Andrew, Jim might have been referring to our "two persons and a dog" sail through the San Juans on our M17. We had no space problem, but the experience was closer to tent camping than yachting. We have a boom "tent" with grommets and shock cords to make the cockpit a dry area, but everything we needed for sailing and living could be kept inside at night. For daysailing, four in no problem with a little coordination of activities (although I can single hand the boat more easily). The cockpit is very large for a boat this size. I routinely sailed with four on my Potter 14, with a substantially smaller cockpit. Tom Jenkins M17 Scintilla On Nov 27, 2010, at 8:34 PM, Jim Ellsworth wrote:

Hi Andrew, Much of my day-sailing is done single-handed, but I also race my M-17 with a crew of three (including me), and we have plenty of cockpit room. Four would begin to crowd the cockpit, particularly with a mid-boom mainsheet. Overnighting alone is luxurious, and with a close friend would be quite comfortable. Three would be doable, but a little crowded. The best feature of the M-17 for me is that it's a stiff, all-weather boat for a single-hander. With the right reefing you can sail through quite a bit of wind. Rick M-17 #633 Lynne L On Sat, Nov 27, 2010 at 4:14 PM, Andrew Lucero <ajlucero88@gmail.com> wrote:

Last week, we had 4 people out for a late season day sail. 3 6'+ guys, average weight 200#, and one woman, 160 and 5'10". We have all sailed together many times, and the occupancy was not any kind of an issue. We could have had another, but the 5th would have made it a bit cozy. The archives have several responses to the passenger question. 2 for an overnight works fine as long as you are used to camping in a small tent. Andrew, I would like to invite you to come on over to the Havasu Pocket Cruisers Convention in February. If you want to check out some Monty's, they will be here! We have over 30 registered (15's, 17's and 23's) as well as many of the names you are familiar with from this list attending. For "market research" on buying a pocket cruiser, I don't think you could find a better location, or a better group of folks to give you accurate information on the boats you choose to look at. Let me know if you decide to come. We can set you up as part of the group to save you some on accommodations. Love to see you here. Here's the web site. www.sailhavasu.com Sean
