The M-17 motors better with no mast onboard than with it up for sure IMHO. either way is not a problem. I think Doug K did the trip with his non-Montgomery boat (can't remember the make) GO M-17t

Doug can answer for himself, but I suspect he used his little Sandpiper, if I have the brand right. We sailed across Rosario Strait up in Puget Sound with Doug nearby, and the X-brand was doing just fine. On Dec 28, 2012, at 9:25 AM, jerry montgomery wrote:

yes, Doug's x-brand is a Sandpiper ... 18' if i remember correctly. i believe that the 'monkey fur' carpet on the cabin hull sides and coach roof makes the boat go faster. similar science to the 'backstay chicken' installed on Jerry's S17. :: Dave Scobie :: M17 #375 SWEET PEA (no monkey fur installed) - www.m17-375.webs.com --- On Fri, 12/28/12, Tom Jenkins <tjenk@gte.net> wrote:

If you are talking about a Canadian made sailboat somewhat similar in size to the M17...that would be that Sandpiper 565 which was last made by CL Boatworks in 1992. I owned a 1986 model. There are still quite a few sailing mostly in Ontario and Quebec. A yearly rendezvous takes place usually in Ontario and attended by a dozen boats. The manufacturer still produces three or four smaller models...the biggest being the CL 16 which was based on the Wayfarer. The Sandpiper 565 is based on the British Sailfish 18. It is indeed a Sandpiper 565. It is a great boat for the inland lakes and is a very comfortable cruising boat. I will probably put it up for sale though as I am not sailing as much in the dessert as I expected to. Don't sell it short. They claim it was designed to sail the English Channel. I bought mine with the intention of sailing the coastal waters of Nova Scotia. My wife didn't share the dream so I now captain a new Legend 16 Xcalibur with a Merc 60 BigFoot. I sure did want an M15 though. Actually, I was referring to Doug's comments about it being a great boat for lakes. The Sandpiper 565 is that and good for protected ocean bays and harbours also. I do believe that the M boats shallow fixed portion of it's keel would be more durable for open waters but on the other hand would be a bit more challenging for trailer sailing at our numerous free primitive type boat launches and 4 to 5 foot tides. There always seems to be compromises when buying boats. On Saturday, December 29, 2012, jerry montgomery <jerry@jerrymontgomery.org> wrote:

I would not want to cross the ocean blue without a mast and a stabilizing sail, but Powell waves are usually small because there is so little fetch. The surface can be all whitecaps with 3"-6" "waves". I think an M17 sans mast would do quite well with its weighted keel and no centerboard. Tom On Dec 28, 2012, at 9:22 AM, GILASAILR@aol.com wrote:
