Re: M_Boats: montgomery_boats Digest, Vol 173, Issue 15
Id be interested in expanding this thread to cover the 17 as well. Since butting her in 2013 I've gotten pretty comfortable with the old girl and would love to roof her for a spinnaker and get some chute practice in. Anyone have advice about how to rig it up? Or for that matter, chutes I might find a good fit? Based on Lyle's original sail plan, a 420 chute seems too small and everything else on the used market is too big. Dan Farrell M17 #301 jerry@jerrymontgomery.org wrote:
Spin gear on the 15 is pretty simple- shock cord, about 1/4" works well for the topping lift as it only needs to carry the weight of the pole, and the foreguy should go to a block just in front of the mast step, then routed aft to where you can reach it. Put the ring on the mast about 3' up, or better yet on a track. The ring needs to be on the strong side because they will take a beating in heavy air. For the sheets, I al;ways used the little Harken cheek blocks, increased the angle on the aft end of the aft toe rails and bolted them thru the flange, just as the rails are. The angle isn't exactly right and they look a bit on the light side, but they work great. I've used them at length in pretty heavy air with never a problem. I cleat them on a medium sized, open Clamcleat on the coaming. Cam cleats would work fine but are much more expensive. Sheets should be twice the length of the bote. Put the block for the halyard about 6" above the hounds, and it's important to run the halyard back to the cockpit. For the pole, measure the J on your boat and double it; it's a 200% chute. A 1" dia pole is fine on the 15.
I'd suggest that you get the chute and pole before you start drilling holes. Set up the rig in your driveway and turn the boat to an appropriate angle to the wind, and duct tape the hardware in place until you're happy. I once sailed a 15 in a race (with my 7 or 8 year-old twins) with all hardware taped down with Gorilla Tape; light air, obviously. Worked fine. Good memories.
Good luck.

Well dang.... now I want a kite! Can anyone post links showing spinnaker setup on an M15? And yes, regardless of color, would love to find a used one if anyone else is wanting to unload theirs. Yeeehawww!

I'd love to do the cruiser challenge again, but Samantha and I have a 5 week old baby (our son Tevian), and I can't leave her alone that long... hopefully I can do it next year. Last year was days before my PhD defense.
I don't have a spinnaker, so I'll just do the race without it. If anyone on the list has one for sale, or would rent/loan it for this race, please let me know. I do have a big nylon drifter, but that's obviously not class legal.
Does anyone have a recommendation for where to buy a good M15 racing spinnaker from, and what type (sailcloth weight, symmetrical vs asymmetrical) is typically used? Is there any chance there is a popular racing dinghy that uses the same size spinnaker, that can be often found used?
Sincerely, Tyler

Geoff Prindle and I did it in my Sage two years ago. You need a spinnaker. I just gave mine to Dave Scobie to use on a Sage 15 or I'd let you use it. it's a fun but not a good race in a non-planing boat; it's all downwind in 20-30 knots and there's no way you can save your time when the competition is planing. Good luck.
The cruiser challenge in Monterey is this sat if interested.

Hi all,
I will be doing this race in my M15, and it would be great if other Montgomery people wanted to participate also. It's a 30 mile race in the California Delta near Sacramento California. The deadline to register is Saturday July 29th, and it costs $50.

I happen to have one I would sell for $30. It might be pink and grey but would have to check.
Thanks

That's nothing, Doug. On my flush deck 17 I had a chute that was hot pink and purple! My wife called it the Fredericks of Hollywood sail. Skip Elliot made it, and when he asked the color I said "surprise me- use something that's about ready to go bad).
Tyler- my chute for the m-15 was a discarded 470 chute. A bit big but no problem, and I used it in 30 kn winds and big chop in Mexico. A FJ chute would probably be fine, also a 420. Dougs would be fine- probably a 200%, which is the class chute. To quote Geo Patton, "old spinnakers never die; they just rip apart". (If you believe that, you'll believe anything).

Me too! :) My self-resurrected flush deck has little info if any out there on it's specifics. This led to many guesses about deck layout, mast/sails/booms issues including where to place the spin pole attachment point on the mast, pole length and spinnaker dimensions etc. A lot of these are "hard wired" now but the spinnaker is not built yet. Maybe Skip Patterson has the original specs for the M 17's... Mine's still not fully functional and sailing but it's so close! On Thu, Jul 20, 2017 at 10:07 AM, Dan Farrell <msog@danf.us> wrote:

Tim- I'm feverously packing and prepping for the Monterey race (Cruiser Challenge) but when I return I'll send out some suggestions. Someone out there has a closeup of the flush deck cockpit, showing layout; if he/she would post it again it would be helpful. -----Original Message----- From: Timothy JarviMD Sent: Thursday, July 20, 2017 8:44 AM To: For and about Montgomery Sailboats Subject: Re: M_Boats: montgomery_boats Digest, Vol 173, Issue 15 Me too! :) My self-resurrected flush deck has little info if any out there on it's specifics.

Thanks for the offer, Jerry👍 The cockpit is done, the sail track is in place, the spin pole ring is on the new mast. The old stuff was in pieces and trashed so it was hard to decipher the rig and deck layout. The only thing holding me back now is the newly found stuck centerboard. What goes up won't come down... Got two friends, each with a gantry crane, that I'll put together to lift the boat and see what's what. While your gone to the race I'll post a few pics of the set-up I did for your thoughts. Much appreciated! Good Luck on the cruise Challenge. Tim On Thu, Jul 20, 2017 at 12:16 PM, <jerry@jerrymontgomery.org> wrote:
Tim- I'm feverously packing and prepping for the Monterey race (Cruiser Challenge) but when I return I'll send out some suggestions. Someone out there has a closeup of the flush deck cockpit, showing layout; if he/she would post it again it would be helpful.

Anyone have advice about how to rig it up? Or for that matter, chutes I might find a good fit? Based on Lyle's original sail plan, a 420 chute seems too small and everything else on the used market is too big.

I've got a M-17 that Jerry rigged for Tom Van Atta, with a great Spin set up. Extra block at the masthead for a spinnaker halyard, spin pole topping lift exits the mast about 3/4/of the way up, pole downhaul turning block on the sloping front of the house, just forward of the hatch and centered, comes back to a check block in front of the grabrail and back to a cam cleat at the back of the cabintop. Metal ring on a track on the front of the mast. Spinnaker pole is about 7 feet long (M/L). Judy B at Hyde Sails can make a spinnaker to your liking.

Good luck.

Thanks
Doug
